The Upside-Down Star: A Poem at the Louvre's Inverted Pyramid

Imad stands beneath the glass pyramid that hangs upside down at the Louvre and reads it as a star pointing inward.

Cover of The Upside-Down Star: the glass pyramid hanging point down in the Louvre, for this Louvre inverted pyramid poem

Imad wrote this Louvre inverted pyramid poem beneath La Pyramide Inversée, the glass skylight designed by I. M. Pei and completed in 1993 in the Carrousel du Louvre, the underground mall in front of the museum. The pyramid hangs point down above a small stone pyramid on the floor, and the poem reads it as a star that sends the visitor inward.

In the deep heart of the Louvre,

Where time slows its footsteps,

And centuries echo softly,

A star of glass hangs suspended.

Not a star in the heavens,

But a sky descending to earth.

A transparent diamond of light,

Suspended between above and below.

Between what was,

And what shall be.

It points toward the depths,

Not toward the peaks.

As if whispering:

Search within first.

For true light begins there.

No throne crowns it,

No king guards it.

No crown adorns it.

Only pure silence.

And patience made of glass.

And an idea suspended in air.

Above it visitors pass.

They walk in haste.

Chasing maps and photographs.

Yet beneath it,

Haste comes to rest.

And contemplation begins.

There silence speaks.

Ancient questions awaken.

Are we truly ascending?

Or descending toward wisdom?

Is greatness found in height?

Or in understanding?

Is the sky above us?

Or within us?

Steel embraces glass.

Glass embraces light.

Light embraces emptiness.

And emptiness fills with meaning.

As if the architect wished to say:

Beauty is not merely form.

It is a beautiful question.

A beautiful mystery.

A journey without end.

O inverted star,

Poem of transparency,

Architecture of contemplation,

Mirror of earth and sky,

You taught a rare lesson.

That what descends may rise.

That bending is strength.

That humility is light.

That beauty never shouts.

It simply whispers.

You stand beneath this pyramid.

And see the world inverted.

Yet somehow clearer.

The past smiles at the future.

Stone shakes hands with light.

Art embraces science.

And Paris dreams.

In this quiet moment,

You understand something profound.

That great architecture,

Builds more than buildings.

It builds ideas.

It builds memory.

And it builds humanity.

Thus the inverted pyramid remains.

A star without night.

A light without flame.

A question without end.

Where stone meets light.

Where silence meets meaning.

And humanity meets itself.
