The Soul Has a Window That Never Closes: Mendelsohn and Heschel

Mendelsohn's buildings wake the eye, Heschel's Sabbath gives the tired worker back his time, and Imad draws a tower with a bench at its foot.

Cover of The Soul Has a Window That Never Closes: a white curved observatory tower in the manner of the Einstein Tower beside a tall golden window open onto a blue sky with a clock face and a spiral stair

The Einstein Tower in Potsdam, Germany, is an astrophysical observatory designed by Erich Mendelsohn and built from 1919 to 1921 for Erwin Finlay-Freundlich's solar telescope. Imad's poem sets it, and Mendelsohn's Schocken store in Chemnitz, beside Abraham Joshua Heschel, whose 1951 book The Sabbath presents it as the sanctification of time, and asks what bold form owes the tired worker and the patient.

An architectural epic between Erich Mendelsohn and Abraham Heschel.

A Note

Names, works, and dates are documented in sources.

The comparison is mine; the imagery is imagined.

The Beginning

I am Imad Darouich; people precede my walls.

I draw a house; life asks for room.

I open a window; morning brings its promise.

I raise a tower, considering people beneath it.

There begins architecture’s examination before human life.

This is why my epic joins Mendelsohn and Heschel.

With the first, I seek the energy of space.

With the second, I seek the sanctity of time.

The Epic

In Potsdam, the Einstein Tower raises its eye.

1924.Mendelsohn designed and built it between 1919 and 1924.

Albert Einstein and Erwin Finlay-Freundlich collaborated on the project.

Its purpose was solar observation and scientific research.

I see earth rising to study the sun.

Inside, the lens learns to read the light.

In Mendelsohn, I read function joining expressive power.

Form serves knowledge and stirs our sense of wonder.

Then his lines carry me toward Schocken.

It stands in Chemnitz, bearing Mendelsohn’s design.

1930.The store opened on 15 May 1930.

Horizontal window bands extend across its steel frame.

I see the façade carrying the city’s gaze.

The eye moves; imagination follows across the street.

But the worker’s body searches for a bench.

Who gives him time to recover himself?

Here I open philosopher Abraham Joshua Heschel’s book.

1951.His book The Sabbath appeared in 1951.

He understood the Sabbath as a sanctuary in time.

A time for rest and connection with the sacred.

His idea enters my drawing as another window.

It overlooks the hours swallowed by work.

I imagine a clock opening an airborne door.

The worker enters, leaving haste at the threshold.

He finds time for family, silence, and breath.

This is my reading: rest holds spiritual value.

Human dignity extends beyond the capacity to produce.

Then a step tests thought within the street.

1965.Heschel joined the Selma march on 21 March 1965.

He walked beside Martin Luther King Jr.

The struggle for civil rights brought them together.

In his step, I read faith accepting responsibility.

I see contemplation becoming courage before injustice.

Now their pairing within my epic becomes clear.

I chose comparison and the complementarity difference creates.

Mendelsohn teaches me how space awakens the eye.

Heschel makes me consider the human life within.

I place powerful form before dignity’s demanding question.

What does the window offer those waiting behind it?

What does the tower do for silent exhaustion?

I seek the answer in a patient’s window.

And a bench protecting an elder’s right to rest.

And an entrance allowing everyone to cross with dignity.

And a square welcoming people and differing voices.

Here ideas become tangible and open to testing.

The body feels compassion before reading its name.

The Ending

I am Imad Darouich; both questions enter my drawing.

From Mendelsohn, I learn boldness in shaping space.

From Heschel, I learn respect for time and dignity.

I want architecture awakening eyes and giving souls room.

I draw the tower, then a bench beneath it.

I open the window, giving morning passage to bed.

Architecture’s greatness begins when it welcomes the most vulnerable.

Then the wall carries meaning worthy of endurance.

And the soul’s window remains open forever.
