The Dome That Summoned Its Architect to Trial: Sinan's Selimiye Mosque
Past seventy, Sinan is summoned to a Court of Domes, where the Şehzade, the Süleymaniye, eight pillars and the light all testify about him.
By Architect Imad Darouich8 min read

The Selimiye Mosque in Edirne, Turkey, was built by Mimar Sinan for Sultan Selim II between 1568 and 1575; Sinan considered it his masterpiece, with a single great dome carried on eight pillars, and UNESCO listed it in 2011. Imad's epic summons the aged Sinan before an imagined Court of Domes, where his earlier mosques, the stone and the light testify.

The trial, dialogue, and scenes in this text are part of an imaginative literary interpretation created to explore his architectural and human world.
Sinan was already past seventy.
People believed he had reached the end of his path.
But the path had not yet reached Sinan.
One night in Edirne, he awoke to a violent knocking at his door.
He opened it.
He found no human being.
He found a circular shadow covering the ground.
At its center lay a summons.
It read:
Mimar Sinan must appear before the Court of Domes.
The charge:
He has spent his life searching for a dome that stone refuses to believe he can build.
Sinan entered the court.
The chamber had no walls.
Hundreds of domes rose above him.
Domes he had built.
Domes he had seen.
And domes not yet born.
The Great Dome sat upon the judge’s platform.
It had no face.
It had only emptiness.
A vast emptiness.
As though a piece of the sky had been cut away and placed above the court.
The Dome asked:
How many buildings have you constructed?
Sinan answered:
I no longer count them.
Mosques.
Schools.
Bridges.
Baths.
Hospitals.
And channels that carried water into cities.
The Dome said:
I asked how much you built.
I did not ask how much of you remained inside what you built.
Sinan fell silent.
The Şehzade Mosque approached the witness stand.
It was young.
Its dome carried the uncertainty of beginnings.
قال:It said:
Sinan called me the work of his apprenticeship.
Within me, he learned how to gather domes.
But he did not find the dome he was seeking.
Then the Süleymaniye Mosque entered.
It was majestic.
Behind it, Istanbul walked slowly.
قال:It said:
He called me the work of his maturity.
He raised me above the city.
Within me, he united worship, knowledge, and service.
Yet after me, he continued looking toward a distant place.
The Dome asked Sinan:
What remained after Süleymaniye?
قال:He answered:
What remained was more difficult than construction.
To remove what the space did not need.
To make columns support without imprisoning.
To make the dome command without crushing those beneath it.
The judge struck the stone with his gavel.
Eight pillars entered.
They were massive.
They advanced carrying a circle of darkness upon their shoulders.
The pillars said:
He asked us to carry a dome thirty-one and a half meters in diameter.
He asked us to be strong.
Then he asked us to disappear.
The Dome asked:
How can a pillar disappear while carrying the sky?
Sinan answered:
It does not disappear from the building.
It disappears from the human perception of its weight.
Strength that displays itself is weakness.
True strength carries in silence.
Stone entered.
It was covered in dust.
Its body bore the marks of thousands of hammers.
Stone said:
This man exhausted me.
He cut me.
He raised me.
And placed upon me a weight I believed I could not bear.
Sinan replied:
You exhausted me as well.
You resisted me in every arch.
In every crack, you reminded me that beauty does not release the architect from calculation.
The court asked Stone:
Did he wrong you?
It answered:
لا.No.
He forced me to discover the strength sleeping within me.
Then Light entered.
It did not open the door.
It entered through dozens of windows.
It spread across the pillars.
And climbed toward the dome.
The court said:
You are the final witness.
Light answered:
Sinan did not build the dome to imprison me beneath it.
He opened many paths for me.
Whenever stone increased, he gave me a window.
Whenever the ceiling approached the earth, I raised it within the human eye.
Sinan said:
Stone builds the boundaries of space.
But light gives it its soul.
Without light, the dome becomes weight.
With it, the dome becomes sky.
The court opened the plan of Edirne.
The city appeared like an ancient page.
At its center rose the Selimiye Mosque.
One dome.
Four minarets.
Eight pillars organizing the interior.
And a complex serving knowledge, people, and the city.
The Dome asked:
Why Edirne?
Sinan answered:
Because a masterpiece does not always require a capital.
It may choose a distant city.
Then make the world come to it.
The verdict was delivered.
Sinan stood alone.
The court declared:
The architect is found guilty.
Guilty of refusing to be satisfied with what he built in youth.
Guilty of continuing to learn after people called him master.
And guilty of attempting to place the knowledge of an entire lifetime beneath one dome.
Sinan asked:
What is the sentence?
The court answered:
You will die.
And your question will remain alive.
1575.The Selimiye Mosque was completed in 1575.
Sinan was approximately eighty years old.
People looked at the dome.
They did not see the years carrying it.
They did not see the bridges that taught him balance.
Nor the mosques that taught him progression.
Nor the errors concealed by mastery.
They saw the result.
They did not see the lifetime paid for it.
1588.Sinan died in 1588.
He was buried near the Süleymaniye Mosque.
But his masterpiece remained in Edirne.
At night, the city disappears into darkness.
The four minarets remain holding the edges of the place.
Inside, the dome remains open above the silence.
As though an old master left his life there.
Then departed the building without a body.
This is the epic of Mimar Sinan.
His struggle was not against stone.
It was against incompleteness.
His victory was not that he built the largest dome.
His victory was making many elements appear as one idea.
We do not study Selimiye to repeat its image.
We study the path that led Sinan to it.
He began as a man of the field.
He observed materials.
He learned from construction.
He tested his ideas.
He failed, corrected, and continued.
Old age did not give him an excuse to stop.
It gave him the ability to refine.
This is the message of Selimiye.
Do not rush to appear a master.
Build.
Observe.
Make mistakes.
Correct them.
Then build again.
Your final masterpiece may be the first work to speak your complete truth.
An architect may need an entire lifetime.
To learn how to place the sky upon eight pillars.
Without making the human being feel its weight.
Sinan's Süleymaniye in Istanbul is read in A Dome Bears a Name, the Ground Bears Everyone, and he stands beside Peter Zumthor in The Earth Has a Memory That Rises. The Tekkiye he planned in Damascus is the subject of The Epic of Tekkiyeh Suleimaniyah.
