Damascus: When the Four Directions Move Together

Imad, a son of Damascus writing from New York, dreams of a new Damascus master plan that treats the city as one living body. He walks its four directions, from Qudsaya and Al-Bjaa in the west and Jobar and Qaboun in the east to Kafr Souseh and Daraya in the southwest and Al-Qadam and Al-Hajar Al-Aswad in the south, and asks that they rise together.

أنا ابن دمشقI am a son of Damascus.

نشأت بين أحيائهاI grew up among her neighborhoods,

وحفظت تضاريسها كما يحفظ المرء خطوط كفه.And learned her geography like the lines of my own hand.

كنت أظن في طفولتي أن دمشق مدينة.As a child, I thought Damascus was merely a city.

ثم اكتشفت مع العمر أنها كائن حي.Then I discovered she is a living organism.

قلب وشرايين.A heart and arteries.

ذاكرة ومستقبل.Memory and future.

شرق وغرب.East and west.

شمال وجنوب.North and south.

ولذلك،And that is why,

فإن دمشق لا يمكن أن تنهض من جهة واحدة.Damascus cannot rise from one direction alone.

فالمدينة التي عمرها آلاف السنينA city thousands of years old

لا تبنى بمحور واحد.Cannot be rebuilt through a single axis.

ولا بحي واحد.Nor through a single district.

ولا بمشروع منفرد مهما كان عظيماً.Nor by one project, no matter how grand.

أرى دمشق اليومToday I see Damascus

كبساط دمشقي عظيم.As a great Damascene carpet.

كل خيط فيه مهم.Every thread matters.

لكن جمال السجادةYet the beauty of the carpet

لا يظهر إلا حين تكتمل جميع الخيوط.Appears only when all threads come together.

في الغرب،In the west,

قدسيا والبجاع.Qudsaya and Al-Bjaa.

ليستا مجرد توسع عمراني.They are not merely urban expansion.

بل رئة جديدة تتنفس منها العاصمة.They are a new lung through which the capital breathes.

وفي الشرق،In the east,

جوبر والقابون.Jobar and Qaboun.

ليسا مجرد إعادة إعمار.They are not merely reconstruction.

بل استعادة لذاكرة دمشق الصناعية والاجتماعية.They are the recovery of Damascus's social and industrial memory.

وفي الجنوب الغربي،In the southwest,

كفرسوسة وداريا.Kafr Souseh and Daraya.

ليستا أبراجاً ومكاتب فقط.They are not only towers and offices.

بل القلب الاقتصادي الذي يضخ الاستثمار والفرص.They are the economic heart pumping investment and opportunity.

وفي الجنوب،In the south,

القدم والحجر الأسود.Al-Qadam and Al-Hajar Al-Aswad.

ليسا مجرد طرق ومستودعات.They are not merely roads and warehouses.

بل بوابة الحركة والتجارة والإنتاج.They are the gateway of movement, commerce, and production.

لكن الحقيقة الأهمYet the greater truth

أن هذه الجهات الأربعIs that these four directions

ليست أربعة مشاريع.Are not four separate projects.

بل بوصلة واحدة.They are one compass.

إذا تحرك أحد أذرعها وحدهIf one arm moves alone

اختل الاتجاه.The direction is lost.

أما إذا تحركت معاًBut when all move together

استقامت الرحلة.The journey becomes true.

أحلم بمخطط تنظيمي جديد لدمشقI dream of a new master plan for Damascus

لا يرى المدينة كأحياء متفرقة.That does not see the city as scattered districts.

بل كمجرة واحدة.But as a single galaxy.

كل نجم فيها يضيء الآخر.Where every star illuminates the others.

وكل طريق يقود إلى فرصة.Every road leads to opportunity.

وكل استثمار يصنع استثماراً جديداً.Every investment generates another.

عندها فقطOnly then

لن تنمو دمشق بصورة عشوائية.Will Damascus stop growing randomly.

بل ستنمو كما تنمو الأشجار العظيمة.She will grow like a great tree.

جذور عميقة.Deep roots.

جذع واحد.One trunk.

وأربعة أغصان كبرىAnd four great branches

تمتد نحو المستقبل.Reaching toward the future.

وحين تتوازن الجهات الأربع،And when the four directions are balanced,

يعود التوازن إلى المدينة.Balance returns to the city.

وحين يعود التوازن إلى المدينة،And when balance returns to the city,

تعود الثقة إلى الإنسان.Confidence returns to its people.

وحين تعود الثقة إلى الإنسان،And when confidence returns to the people,

تعود دمشق إلى مكانها الطبيعي.Damascus returns to her natural place.

ليس كعاصمة لسوريا فقط.Not only as the capital of Syria.

بل كعاصمة روحية وتاريخية للإنسانية.But as a spiritual and historical capital of humanity.

فأنا لا أحلم بمدينة أكبر.I do not dream of a larger city.

بل بمدينة أعظم.I dream of a greater city.

مدينة تتنفس من جهاتها الأربع معاً.A city breathing through all four directions at once.

مدينة يتحرك فيها العمران والاقتصاد والإنسانA city where urbanism, economy, and people move

كما تتحرك آلات ساعة دمشقية قديمة،Like the gears of an ancient Damascene clock,

في انسجام كامل،In perfect harmony,

ودقة كاملة،With perfect precision,

وجمال لا يشيخ.And beauty that never grows old.
