Crossrail Place: The Cathedral of Motion
At Canary Wharf, a building of glass and steel asked Imad to enter it with his soul rather than his eyes.
By Architect Imad DarouichUpdated 3 min read

Imad wrote this Crossrail Place poem at Canary Wharf in London, before a building by Norman Foster that seemed to him a prayer made of glass. Steel columns become metal trees and the shadows turn like dervishes, until the clocks melt as if Dalí had painted the city again. He leaves unsure whether he left the building or the building entered him.

In London... trains do not travel only upon rails.
They travel through the arteries of time itself.
There... at Canary Wharf...
I encountered something I could not name, a building... or a prayer made of glass.
The steel was whispering sacred hymns.
Light bowed gently upon the columns.
The shadows whirled like Sufi dervishes.
The building whispered:
"Do not enter me with your eyes... enter me with your soul."
I stepped closer...
The walls disappeared.
Only space remained.
Yet it was no emptiness...
It was a living creature breathing.
There...
For the first time...
I understood that space is not the absence of matter...
It is the presence of the Divine between matter.
Norman Foster...
Did not draw lines.
He opened fractures in time...
So London could glimpse its own future.
Every column...
A metallic tree.
Every window...
An eye dreaming.
Every bridge...
A string on a cosmic instrument.
Suddenly...
A train emerged.
It carried no passengers.
It carried their lifetimes.
I saw people running after their clocks...
While the clocks ran after the trains.
Then time itself began to melt...
As though Dalí had returned
To paint London once again.
Yet...
Within this beautiful hallucination...
I heard another voice.
Not the train.
Not the wind.
Not the city.
It was Architecture itself.
It spoke:
"I am not stone."
"I am the idea before stone."
"I am not a roof."
"I am the sky choosing to descend."
Then I witnessed...
Every building in London prostrating toward light.
Not toward the sun...
But toward Truth.
When I finally left...
I could no longer tell...
Had I left the building...
Or had the building entered me?
Since that day...
Every time I draw a line...
I hear Canary Wharf whispering:
"Do not build walls...
Build souls."
