The Epic of the Umayyad Mosaics

Fires and earthquakes buried them, but the mosaics kept breathing until scaffolds rose to bring back their light.

By Architect Imad DarouichUpdated 2 min read

Golden mosaics of trees and palaces on a mosque wall in Damascus, the subject of this poem on the Umayyad mosaics restoration

This short epic follows the Umayyad mosaics restoration that began in 1928, when researchers climbed wooden scaffolds to free colours hidden for centuries under dust after fires and earthquakes. Imad sees every tessera returned to its place as a star returning to the sky, and the mosaics of Al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik as a nation's memory made of light.

They were not stones upon a wall,

They were Damascus writing its light in colors.

More than thirteen centuries ago,

Artists raised the heavens upon stone.

Then came fires and earthquakes,

And time believed it had won.

Yet the mosaics continued to breathe.

Hidden beneath dust and centuries.

And in 1928,

The great rescue began.

Researchers climbed the wooden scaffolds,

Like pilgrims ascending toward a vision.

They seemed to restore a wall,

But in truth they were saving a civilization.

Every tessera returned to its place,

Was a star returning to the sky.

Every color reclaiming its brilliance,

Was another victory over oblivion.

Here speaks Al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik,

Through the silence of thirteen centuries.

And here speaks Damascus,

In a language beyond words.

Empires may fall,

But beauty remains standing.

Kings may die,

Yet art remains alive.

For this is not merely a mosaic,

But a nation's memory made of light.

Nor is it merely a picture from the past,

But an open window into eternity.
