The Epic of the Syrian Countryside Between Ghouta and New York

A son of the Syrian countryside lives an American life in New York, but his voice still comes from the trees of Ghouta.

Olive trees of the Syrian countryside beside the towers of Manhattan, the two worlds of this Syrian countryside poem

In this Syrian countryside poem, Imad introduces himself as a son of dusty roads and olive fields near Damascus, where every house looked like a poem of survival. Now he lives in New York, where his children speak fluent English and dream like American children, yet crossing its bridges brings back the old roads of Douma and the trees of Ghouta.

I Am The Son Of The Syrian Countryside.

Son Of Ancient Dusty Roads.

And Of Fields Once Filled

With Moonlight And Olive Trees.

I Grew Near Wounded Damascus.

Between Minarets And Bread Aroma.

The Sky Was My First Teacher.

I Learned Patience From the Wind.

And Survival From Cracked Walls.

In Syrian Countryside

Sorrow Was Always Architectural.

It Had Exhausted Columns.

And Windows Crying Silently.

Every House There

Looked Like A Poem Of Survival.

Every Mother

Carried Homeland Inside Black Fabric.

I Watched Syria Break Slowly.

Like An Abandoned Palace.

I Saw People Sleeping

Upon Fear, Cold, And Hunger.

But Syrian Countryside

Never Learned Absolute Hatred.

It Screamed Often.

Then Returned To Plant Jasmine.

Today I Live In New York.

A City Rising Like

An Epic Of Steel And Glass.

I Walk Beneath Manhattan Towers.

And Hear Voices Of Entire World.

My Children Speak English Fluently.

And Dream Like American Children.

We Became A Family Living American Life.

But Our Roots Still Remain There.

Inside Ghouta And Damascus Countryside.

Inside Soil Smell After Rain.

Inside Distant Call To Prayer.

We Still Carry Syria Quietly.

In The Way We Honor Guests.

In Sacred Fear Of Mothers.

In Endless Restless Nostalgia.

I Now Live An American Life.

But My Heart Remains Rural Syrian.

When Crossing New York Bridges.

I Remember Old Roads Of Douma.

When Touching Tower Glass.

I Remember Broken Home Stones.

We Never Escape Our Roots.

We Carry Them With Us

Like Sacred Eternal Names.

Syria Is Not Just A Country.

Syria Is Memory Of Entire Soul.

And When Homeland Breaks

It Becomes An Epic Within Us.

An Epic Of Nostalgia And Concrete.

Of Love And Endless Exile.

I Am The Son Of Syrian Countryside.

I Write From New York Now.

But My Voice Still

Emerges From Ghouta Trees.
