Hymn of Architecture: Tribute to the Damascus Faculty of Architecture
A tribute to the faculty where light gives a daily lecture and the stairs ask students to climb higher.
By Architect Imad DarouichUpdated 4 min read

This hymn is a poem for architecture students, written for the Faculty of Architecture at Damascus University and dedicated to Dr. Burhan Tayara, whom Imad honors as the mind that gave the building life. He reads its windows as eyes, its columns as lines of verse and its atrium as a room where light gives a daily lecture, and asks students to enter with humility, wonder and questions.
Dedicated to Dr. Burhan Tayara

In the heart of Damascus,
Where sunlight embraces stone every morning,
And where history passes
With quiet footsteps among trees and arches,
Rises the Faculty of Architecture
Like an idea emerging from an ancient book
To inhabit the future.
It is not merely a building.
Nor classrooms and halls.
Nor walls of concrete.
It is a poem.
A poem written with stone and light.
And Burhan Tayara,
That dreamer who saw beyond form,
Was not drawing a building.
He was drawing thought.
He was sculpting a vision.
And he whispered to geometry:
Be more than dimensions and lines.
Become a language of the soul.
O poet of concrete,
You who taught the wall how to speak,
And shadow how to move,
And emptiness how to sing,
You left in every corner a trace
Like the signature of light.
Every window there
Is not merely an opening.
It is an eye.
An eye looking toward the world
And asking endless questions.
And every column
Is not merely support.
It is a verse of a poem.
And every corridor
Is not a path between two rooms.
It is a journey between two ideas.
Here,
Students learn
That architecture is not form.
But a position.
Not a façade.
But a vision.
Not merely a profession.
But a responsibility.
Within this great atrium,
Light descends from heaven
Like a daily lecture.
Passing through glass.
Touching the floor.
And writing upon walls
Lessons never taught in books.
And the staircases,
Do not merely rise.
They invite ascension.
As though they say to students:
Do not settle for what already exists.
Search for what could be.
O students of architecture,
Enter this building
As a mystic enters a sacred sanctuary.
With humility.
With wonder.
With questions.
For here,
Even silence teaches.
Even light sketches.
Even shadows
Carry ideas waiting to be read.
This place is not a shelter.
It is a compass.
Yet it does not point north.
It points toward wonder.
Toward curiosity.
Toward imagination.
To that place
Where ideas become cities.
And dreams become architecture.
Let us honor today
Not only the walls.
But the mind that gave them life.
The mind that saw
That architecture is not power.
Nor spectacle.
Nor silent stone.
But poetry.
Poetry that is built.
And inhabited.
And lived.
Peace upon Burhan Tayara.
And peace upon every teacher
Who made architecture a message.
And peace upon every student
Holding a drawing in one hand
And a dream in the heart.
For great cities
Always begin
With a small idea
In the mind of an architect who believes in the impossible.
