The Trial of Poverty Before a Mother Who Refused Defeat

Poverty sat at their table for years, the mother tells the court, but it never entered their hearts.

A mother standing with three sons in white doctors' coats, the scene of this poem about a mother's sacrifice

This poem about a mother's sacrifice puts poverty itself on trial. It enters the courtroom in torn clothes and finds no judges or lawyers, only a mother standing in silence with three men in white coats behind her, the children it once tried to defeat, now doctors. Poverty admits that hunger and cold can be endured, but education is its undoing.

On a morning that never existed.

Poverty awoke terrified.

A summons waited outside.

Written in strange ink.

You must appear in court."

The trembling accused asked why.

The guard answered coldly.

You are charged with failure."

Poverty entered the courtroom.

Wearing torn garments.

Carrying a long history.

He sat in accusation.

Looking around nervously.

There were no judges.

No lawyers nor witnesses.

Only a mother.

Standing in solemn silence.

Behind her stood three men.

Wearing white coats.

Poverty became uneasy.

He knows doctors well.

They are old enemies.

The invisible judge spoke.

Do you know this woman?"

Poverty trembled slightly.

And answered quietly.

Yes... I tried defeating her."

The judge asked again.

And did you succeed?"

Poverty remained silent.

Silence became confession.

He looked at the children.

But they were gone.

Three doctors stood instead.

And that terrified him.

Because poverty understands something.

Hunger can be endured.

Cold can be endured too.

Education kills poverty.

Poverty protested desperately.

I gave them everything."

I gave muddy roads.

I gave harsh nights.

I gave daily fear.

The mother finally smiled.

Speaking with strange calm.

And I gave them hope."

Poverty grew more confused.

Hope is beyond his calculations.

Hope appears in no statistics.

Nor obeys equations.

Nor lives in reports.

The mother addressed the judge.

He visited us daily."

He sat at our table."

He slept beside my children."

But never entered our hearts."

Then poverty stepped back.

The courtroom narrowed.

The walls moved closer.

The air was disappearing.

The judge asked once more.

Who won in the end?"

Poverty looked at her.

Then at the doctors.

Then silently downward.

And spoke brokenly.

I never defeated them."

Their mother defeated me."

At that moment.

The courtroom disappeared.

The judge vanished too.

Poverty faded slowly.

Only the mother remained.

At the center.

Like a column.

Holding the world's roof.

As though she were a city.

Built entirely from patience.

As for the doctors.

They were not only sons.

They were delayed letters.

Finally delivered.

After many years.

Thus the trial ended.

And poverty was sentenced.

To watch the image forever.

And remember daily.

That one believing mother.

Is stronger than an empire.
