After I'm Gone: A Poem About a Forgotten Father
A father waits by a silent phone for children who drifted away, and the poem warns them what regret will cost.
By Architect Imad DarouichUpdated 3 min read

This poem about a forgotten father follows a man whose house once rang with his children's voices. They grow up and drift away, through forgetting more than distance, and he is left opening the door each evening to check that the world still knows him. Imad addresses it to every son and daughter who means to call tomorrow.
This is not a text about a song
This is a verdict on delayed hearts
There is no melody or music here
Here stands a father waiting in silence
A father who asked only for a moment
A moment telling him he still exists
But moments were stolen from him
One after another without mercy
Until time itself became his enemy
And here the epic begins
He was not alone at first
The house once echoed with his voice and their laughter
The walls knew their names
And his heart memorized their steps
Then they grew… and drifted away
Not by distance… but by forgetting
The phone became silent like a grave
Waiting became a daily ritual
Every evening he opened the door
Not expecting anyone… just to check
That the world had not erased him
Yet he was fading slowly
Like a photograph losing its light
He heard their laughter in memory
But memory was never enough
He needed a real voice
A name called once again
But his name became a burden
An old memory with no time
And here something broke beyond repair
He did not cry… he did not scream
He just went silent… deeper silence
A silence like the end of cities
Then he said in terrifying calm
After I am gone… you will understand
It was not a warning
It was a truth heavy as stone
Regret never brings anyone back
Time waits for no one
And when a father breaks
No one hears the fall
When beautiful things die
The noise begins inside us
You will remember small details
His cup… his voice… his gaze
You will search for him everywhere
In photos… in silence… in air
But truth is harsher than searching
That he will never return
And here the real kneeling begins
A kneeling unseen by eyes
But carved deep inside the heart
The kneeling of unforgivable regret
Children kneeling before their absence
And no one will hear them this time
Even he… will not hear them
