The Life and Mind Building: Where Ideas Learned to Build Themselves
In Oxford, Imad saw a building that seemed less like a building than a brain growing out of the earth.

This prose poem visits the Oxford Life and Mind Building and reads it as a brain growing from the earth rather than a block of laboratories. Its windows become eyes on the future, its walls living membranes, its courtyard a heart and its roof a small forest, while psychologists, botanists and zoologists share one forest of ideas. Imad leaves carrying a question instead of a photograph.

I did not arrive in Oxford...
I entered a dreaming mind.
The city slept upon its books.
The books dreamed...
That they were trees.
I asked the stones:
"Who teaches you to think?"
They answered:
"The roots."
Then I saw the Life and Mind Building...
Yet it was not a building.
It was a brain...
Growing from the earth.
Every window...
Was an eye.
Not looking outward...
But gazing into the future.
The walls...
Were not walls.
They were living membranes...
Breathing.
Thinking.
Dreaming.
Suddenly...
I heard the laboratories...
Speaking with the trees.
The trees said:
"You search for life beneath microscopes."
"We create it...
In silence."
Psychologists conversed with butterflies.
Botanists wrote letters to clouds.
Zoologists asked birds...
How the sky is drawn.
Science was no longer divided into disciplines.
It had become a forest.
Every idea...
A leaf.
Every question...
A seed.
Every answer...
A fruit.
Then I reached the courtyard.
Yet it was no courtyard.
It was a heart.
Everyone who crossed it...
Left with one extra heartbeat.
The building whispered:
"I do not fear ignorance."
"I fear knowledge...
That refuses dialogue."
Then...
The walls disappeared.
Only light remained.
Then light vanished.
Only the question remained.
Then the question vanished.
Only the human being endured.
Upon the roof...
There were no machines.
No steel.
Only a small forest...
Waiting to become an idea.
I asked Oxford:
"How have you remained alive for a thousand years?"
She smiled.
"Because I never preserved knowledge..."
"I allowed it to transform."
When I finally left...
I carried no photograph.
I carried a question.
Heavier than concrete...
Lighter than light.
Since that day...
Whenever I design a building...
I no longer ask:
How many floors will it have?
I ask instead:
How many ideas will be born inside it?
Architecture is not the art of constructing walls...
It is the art of shaping the minds that will live among them.
