A grandson writing from the year 3000 asks his ancestor what our age could never explain to itself.

Illustration for A Letter from the Year 3000: an unstamped letter arriving from the far future

In this prose poem, a letter from the year 3000 arrives at Imad's home in New York with no stamp and no sender's address. Its writer is a distant grandson who has read all of our history and still cannot understand our borders, our hunger beside full warehouses or our loneliness in a connected world. The letter ends with what his century finally learned.

I am Imad Darouich.

On a quiet night in New York.

A letter arrived without a stamp.

And without a sender's address.

And without the name of a country.

Written upon it were the words:

To be opened after a thousand years of confusion."

I opened it with a trembling hand.

The dust of the future emerged.

And the scent of centuries not yet born.

The author of the letter was my grandson.

Or perhaps the grandson of my grandson.

He wrote:

Greetings, Grandfather."

3000.""I am writing to you from the year 3000."

We have read all of your history."

And studied all of your wars."

But we understood nothing."

Why did you divide the Earth into borders?"

When it spins as a single sphere?"

Why did brother kill brother?"

For a flag of different colors?"

And how did millions go hungry?"

In an age when warehouses overflowed?"

And how did people feel lonely?"

While connected to the entire world?"

At that moment I folded the letter.

And looked through the window.

The city glittered with lights.

Yet I felt an immense darkness.

My grandson continued:

Grandfather."

Today we have machines that think."

And cities floating above the oceans."

And ships traveling between planets."

But our greatest invention."

Is not a machine."

We finally learned."

That a human being is more important than an idea."

More important than a party."

More important than a market."

More important than power."

Then the words stopped.

But one final line appeared slowly.

As if emerging from the heart of time.

Grandfather."

You were not poor in knowledge."

You were poor in wisdom."

It was not intelligence you lacked."

But courage."

The courage to love one another more."

When I finished reading.

The letter vanished.

But the question remained suspended in the air.

Will our descendants laugh at us?

Or will they forgive us?

And will history remember us

As the generation that built the future?

Or as the generation that lost humanity

While searching for everything else?
