The Last Epic of Hanna Mina

He asked for no flowers, no speeches and no announcement, only an ordinary grave and the books that would keep speaking.

An ordinary grave by the sea beside a stack of novels, the image behind this poem on Hanna Mina

This short poem honors Hanna Mina, the novelist who asked that his death not be announced: no flowers on the coffin, no speeches at the grave, no tears for display. Imad reads that request as a final novel without heroes or applause, the humility of a writer who knew that true glory lives between the pages of books, and that the sea needs no applause.

He did not write a will of death.

He wrote his final novel.

A novel without heroes.

A novel without applause.

He said: Do not announce my death.

Let silence do the speaking.

Let the earth do its work.

No flowers upon the coffin.

No speeches above the grave.

No tears for display.

For what will be said after my death,

I already heard during my life.

What wisdom is this?

What humility is this?

To flee from praise,

While fully capable of gathering it.

He knew that true glory

Lives between the pages of books.

Not among wreaths of flowers.

He knew that the sea

Needs no applause.

Nor does a storm need a witness.

So he asked for an ordinary grave.

Just as he lived an extraordinary life.

The body departed.

But the novels remained.

The writer departed.

But the sea kept speaking.

Hanna Mina departed.

Yet his voice remained in the books.

For some men, when they die,

Their presence grows smaller.

But he,

Became larger than absence.
