Michelangelo's The Creation of Adam on the Sistine Chapel ceiling, the fresco this Creation of Adam poem reads

Imad wrote this Creation of Adam poem as a reading of Michelangelo's fresco on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City, painted between 1508 and 1512. In the fresco the two index fingers, God's and Adam's, are separated by a small gap. The poem opens with a short dialogue with the painter and with Adam, then looks long at that gap, the clay and the first breath.

Two hands stretching across the void.

God in His majesty approaches, and Adam in his fragility waits.

Michelangelo whispers: "I did not just paint a body, but the moment of the first breath."

The colors burn like the sky at dawn.

The painting speaks: "The distance between two fingers is the lifetime of humanity."

Adam opens his eyes half-shut, as if waking from an eternal dream.

I ask him: "Do you feel the wonder?"

He answers with fear and a smile: "It is the first wonder… the wonder of life."

God does not touch, but leaves a space so that longing remains a fire.

Michelangelo laughs: "The touch is unfinished… so that every life remains an anticipation of reunion."

I close my eyes, and see my own finger stretched across time,

Searching for God, for the breath that has never ceased.

A hand stretches from heaven, like the first lightning,

And another rises from clay, as if earth itself tries to speak.

The gap between the fingers is not emptiness, but a planet being born, a sun igniting human blood.

It is the spark, the moment when dust became memory and air became soul.

God is not an old man seated on a cloud, but a cosmic mind, surrounded by angels like thoughts not yet born.

His angels are not mere winged beings, but symbols of knowledge, music, and love.

He extends His hand saying: “Be,” and in the touch freedom is born before obedience.

And Adam, tender body of living clay, half awake, half asleep,

His beauty naked as the earth on the first day.

He does not yet know his name, but he knows he is beloved.

He extends his hand in fear and hope, like a child asking his father for the secret of life.

Michelangelo did not paint a passing instant,

He painted the theater of existence: silence before speech, light before dawn, man before mankind.

Every muscle in Adam’s body is a poem, every bend in God’s hand a prophecy.

The tiny distance between the two fingers is the greatest void in history,

For it is the distance dividing death from life.

The ceiling itself rises as a second sky,

Color is not pigment but blood, lines are not decoration but a cosmic hymn.

The painting is not a painting, it is a gospel in pigments, a Torah in colors, a Qur’an in shapes.

Before this vision, you forget yourself.

You feel you are not a viewer, but a participant in creation itself.

As if God’s hand stretches to you, not to Adam.

As if you are the dust waiting to breathe.

The Creation of Adam is not the beginning of history, but the beginning of the question:

What is man? And who breathed into him?

Are we God’s image, His shadow, or a dream from His sleep?

Michelangelo placed this question on a ceiling of stone,

To remain hanging above our heads, watching us whenever we lift our eyes to heaven.

Hands are also at the center of Rembrandt: The Jewish Bride, a dialogue with a painted couple that finds in their touch care without possession, in the literature and art collection.
