When I Stepped Outside the City's Frame: Magritte and Escher

An architect draws a house so carefully that he cannot get out of it, until two painters show him which line to erase.

By Architect Imad Darouich4 min read

Imad's cover for his piece on Magritte and Escher: a stone house of tangled staircases and arches, with Magritte in a bowler hat, a portrait of Escher, a floating hat, New York towers through the openings and a bench under a tree

René Magritte, the Belgian surrealist, and M. C. Escher, the Dutch graphic artist of impossible objects and endless loops, were both born in 1898. Imad's imagined vision brings Magritte and Escher into a house he has drawn one evening in New York and cannot leave: the door is only painted on, the sky hides another wall, and stairs made of his unfinished projects keep returning him to the same window.

The Introduction

One evening in New York, I drew a house where a person could rest.

I placed the door, widened the window, and left room for a tree.

Yet every time I drew a room, something of my fear entered it.

When I finished, I found myself standing inside the drawing.

The house was beautiful.

And the door was painted on the wall.

The Epic

I pushed it. It did not move.

Behind me, a man in a black hat said: You drew the shape of an exit and forgot the exit itself.

It was Magritte.

He approached the window and drew the sky aside like a curtain.

Another wall appeared behind it.

I stepped back.

I asked: Even the sky?

He said: You hung this one here to reassure yourself. You must discover what lies behind it.

I heard footsteps overhead.

I looked up. Escher was walking on a staircase that rose, then returned to its beginning.

He called: Come.

I climbed toward him.

I passed the same window three times.

Each time, I saw myself inside, sitting and drawing this house.

I ran.

The staircase brought me back to the window.

I stopped, breathless.

Escher said: Look beneath your feet.

The steps were made from my old papers.

Projects I had postponed. Letters I had never sent. Ideas awaiting a better day.

Everything I had left unfinished had become a staircase returning me to the same place.

I sat on a step.

Beyond the glass, New York rose in the distance. Thousands of windows, and mine would not open.

I said: I know how to build a house. Why can I not leave this one?

Magritte sat beside me.

He placed his hand against the wall. His fingers remained on its surface, but their shadow passed through.

He said: Try drawing what you need now.

I took out my pencil.

I began to draw a larger door.

Then I stopped.

I needed air.

I erased a small line from the wall.

A breeze entered.

I erased another line.

The sounds of the street reached me.

The opening widened. I saw a man carrying bread, a woman hurrying her child along, and a tree moving in the wind.

Life was there, moving forward with all its imperfections.

And I was here, waiting for the drawing to be perfect.

I stood.

O Lord, You gave me a hand that builds; help me use it to open what I have closed around myself.

I erased the wall down to the ground.

The staircase broke free of its loop.

Its final step descended to my feet and became a threshold.

The Ending

I stepped outside.

I turned toward the house. It was still standing, and air was passing through its rooms.

Escher pointed to a sheet still in my hand.

It was blank.

Magritte asked: What will you draw?

I looked at the people, then laid the paper across my knee.

I drew a bench beneath a tree.

Before I finished its shadow, a weary man sat down on it.

I looked up at him.

For the first time, a human being arrived before my plans were complete.

So I put down my pencil and made room for him.

Escher returns in When the Line Refused to End, about his visits to the Alhambra, and a whole surreal city rises in Architecture Beyond Reality. Walking into a picture is also the subject of The Epic of Damascus and Art: When I Walked Inside the Painting.
