In the Heart of Doha: A Journey Through Architecture and Spirit
Guided by an architect friend, Imad walks Doha from a golden stadium to a library that feels like an ocean of knowledge.

This Doha architecture tour follows Imad and his guide, the architect Anas Al-Kayal, from the stadium at Lusail, which he likens to a golden lantern, to Norman Foster's towers in West Bay and the Qatar National Library by Rem Koolhaas. It ends at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, a building Imad calls the Sad University for its depth and calm.
With Architect Anas Al-Kayal
Not everyone who guides you through a city opens only its streets.
Some open its soul.
Some help you see beyond façades.
Some transform a visit into a journey through meaning.
Such was my journey with architect Anas Al-Kayal.
He was not a tour guide.
He was a translator between the city and its visitors.
A bridge between stone and idea.
Between architecture and humanity.
In Doha,
One discovers that cities can be built with wealth.
But only a few are built with vision.
Qatar chose to build with vision.
A vision that does not look only at the present.
But toward generations yet to come.
Our journey began in Lusail.
Where the famous stadium stands
Like a giant golden lantern
Descended from the tales of One Thousand and One Nights
And settled beside the Gulf.
There I felt that architecture
Is not merely an engineering achievement.
But a civilizational message.
Every opening in the façade
Tells the story of Arab light.
Every golden reflection
Carries something of the desert's memory.
Then we moved toward the towers of West Bay.
Where the works of Norman Foster rise
Like poems made of glass.
Towers that do not scream.
Nor boast of their power.
But whisper with confidence.
Reflecting the sky
As if wishing to become part of it.
There I understood
That great architecture
Does not impose its presence.
It earns your respect through silence.
Then we entered Qatar National Library.
And there everything changed.
I did not feel I was in a library.
But inside an ocean of knowledge.
An open space.
Light without boundaries.
Books extending
Like ideal cities extending through imagination.
In that place
I grasped the genius of Rem Koolhaas.
He did not design a building for books.
He designed a space for ideas.
A place where a person feels
That knowledge is not shelves.
But an endless journey.
Our final stop
At Hamad Bin Khalifa University.
The building I like to call
The Sad University.
Not because it is truly sad.
But because it is profound.
Quiet.
Reflective.
A building that does not seek to impress.
But seeks to make you think.
It carries the dignity of monasteries.
And the calm of great libraries.
And the strength of institutions that believe in thought.
There I felt
That architecture had reached maturity.
No longer seeking applause.
But wisdom.
At the end of the journey,
I remembered not only the buildings.
But the person who accompanied me through them.
Architect Anas Al-Kayal.
The architect who transformed the tour
Into a dialogue between two souls.
The soul of a city.
And the soul of an architect always searching
For meaning beyond form.
Thank you, Anas.
For you guided me not only among buildings.
But among ideas.
Among memories.
And among dreams still under construction.
And so I left Doha.
Yet Doha never left me.
It remained in memory
As a city that understands
Architecture is not stone.
But vision.
Not towers.
But humanity.
Not form.
But a spirit capable of dreaming.
