Talal Akili: When Damascus Stood Behind a Ruler
Imad's tribute, in Arabic and English, to a Damascus architect, teacher and scholar of the Umayyad Mosque.

Talal Akili is a Damascus architect and professor, born in 1937, whose study The Great Mosque of Damascus: From Roman Temple to Monument of Islam appeared in 2009 and in a German edition in 2016. Imad's tribute to Talal Akili walks from the faculty studio to the courtyard of the Umayyad Mosque and the lanes of Sarouja, and asks what a new plan does to the houses already standing in its way.
Note: This epic tribute to Dr. Talal Akili draws on his academic work, his study of the Umayyad Mosque, and his defense of Damascus’s identity. Its literary imagery is my own, not quotations from him.
I am an architect.
I know how a wall is drawn.
But I pause before those who understand what its shadow might destroy.
There, I read the name Talal Akili.
In the distance between the hand’s power… and its responsibility.
For the city enters the plan in silence.
The tree cannot object.
Nor can an old house attend the hearing held in its defense.
That is the task of those who listen.
Those who know that a small line can sever an entire history.
Talal,
In the faculty of architecture, the trial begins before a grade is given.
A student raises a tower on paper.
Beneath the paper, an entire neighborhood waits for sunlight.
Who will bring those people into the drawing?
Who will teach the pencil to remember them?
Here, knowledge becomes an unseen foundation.
It holds the building when no one can see it.
At the Umayyad Mosque, time changes its pace.
I walk through the courtyard.
And feel the centuries passing through me.
A column holds a roof.
And beyond the roof, it holds layers of questions.
How did this place change?
What endured?
And which hand left its mark, then lost its name?
Your study of this monument opens a doorway within the doorway.
I see the stone more closely.
And see the distance between looking and knowing.
How many eyes have passed before a wall.
And how much history remained behind it, unread.
Then I reach Sarouja.
A narrow lane.
Yet memory passes through it with broad shoulders.
An ancient door lays its wooden palm upon the house’s chest.
And a courtyard keeps a small share of the sky.
A new plan arrives.
The houses become numbers.
And numbers are easy to erase.
Here, I need the architect’s voice.
Before dust becomes the only witness.
Defending Damascus is precise work.
It requires knowledge at every stone.
And courage at every signature.
For a signature may take a second.
And the city may pay for it for a hundred years.
I hear the Barada beneath the noise of projects.
And see the Ghouta searching for its place on the map.
And Qasioun stands at the far edge of the scene.
As though waiting for us to lift our heads from the ledgers.
Water reaching a home.
A road bringing someone back to their family.
And a city whose residents are not exhausted simply by crossing it.
This, too, is architecture.
Here, construction rises within people’s lives.
Talal Akili,
I salute the meeting of teaching, research, and practice in your career.
And salute the question that remains standing before the plan:
What will this idea do to the city?
As a son of this profession, I place that question upon my table.
Whenever a line grows straighter than it should.
And whenever empty space tempts me to fill it.
For that space may be a breath.
And that shade may be a right.
And the house that stands in the drawing’s way…
May be the last sentence through which the city can speak its name.
Let us leave Damascus enough of itself.
The mosque at the centre of his research is the subject of The Umayyad Mosque of Damascus: The Epic of Stone That Learned to Pray, and Mamoun Al-Wareh, who worked in his office, has his own tribute in He Sets a Ruler upon Paper, and a City Rises. A larger plan for the city is imagined in A Master Plan for Damascus: When the Four Directions Move Together.
