Mamoun Al-Wareh: He Sets a Ruler upon Paper, and a City Rises

Imad's tribute, in Arabic and English, to a Damascus architect who drew housing and institutes and led its faculty of architecture.

Cover of Imad's Mamoun Al-Wareh tribute: the architect's portrait above a white model city rising from a paper plan beside a brass ruler

Mamoun Al-Wareh is a Damascus architect, born in 1945, who graduated from Damascus University in 1972, earned a PhD at the University of Sheffield in 1979 and became dean of the university's Faculty of Architecture in 2007, according to the Archive of Modern Architecture in Syria. Imad's tribute to Mamoun Al-Wareh reads his projects one by one, from the airport workers' housing designed with Charles Kassab to the demolished Floral Exhibition, and asks what an architect's line leaves behind.

Note: This epic tribute to Professor Mamoun Al-Wareh draws on information published online and his biography documented by the Archive of Modern Architecture in Syria, based on his CV and an interview conducted by the archive’s team in 2023. Collaborators are credited for their respective roles; the epic imagery and scenes are my own imaginative reflections, not quotations attributed to him.

I am an architect.

I know the page when it is land without inhabitants.

And I know the terror of the first line.

That small incision in whiteness…

That may become a street through which lifetimes pass.

That is why I read Mamoun Al-Wareh slowly.

As one reads foundations beneath a city.

Damascus, 1945.

A child was born.

And I imagine the city placing two windows in his eyes.

One through which to see what stands.

Another through which to see what could exist.

Between those windows, the journey would unfold.

1972… Graduation from Damascus University.

From the architecture department of the Faculty of Fine Arts.

Then a teaching assistant where he had studied.

As though the door, when he left, had kept a seat for him within.

During and after his studies, he worked in the offices of Abd al-Rauf al-Kasm and Talal Akili.

There, I imagine the line leaving the teacher’s examination…

To enter the test of construction.

A detail refusing completion.

And a material imposing its conditions.

And an idea learning to stand upon its feet.

1974… To Sheffield.

Damascus University sent him for postgraduate study.

In late 1979, the doctorate was completed, according to the archive.

1980.Then he returned in 1980.

I imagine a bridge of questions between Damascus and Sheffield.

How does thought become space?

How do we give need a form?

And where does the human being stand when theories crowd together?

He returned.

And knowledge had to come down to earth.

The Opera House… Behind the Curtain, a Drawing Keeps Vigil.

While completing his military service in the Military Housing Corporation’s architectural office, he worked on completing the building’s construction documentation.

I preserve that role by its precise name.

For a building has many hands.

And I imagine music waiting within the details.

Before the applause.

Before light rises upon the stage.

Someone keeps vigil so the performance can begin.

Housing for Damascus International Airport Workers… For Those Who Help the World Depart.

With Charles Kassab, a project that shared second place in the 1980–1982 competition and was subsequently built.

I see a worker returning from the airport.

Many faces have passed before him.

And aircraft have closed their doors upon distant journeys.

Now, he needs a door that opens for him.

And a light that announces no departure.

Here, architecture becomes a homecoming.

And a key becomes a merciful ending to a long day.

Kewan and the Floral Exhibition, 1982.

The International Floral Exhibition and the planning of the recreational area.

A project the archive records as demolished.

I pause at that word.

Demolished.

On paper, it seems short.

In the memory of a place, its dust never settles.

I imagine a flower searching for its path.

And a bench remembering those who sat upon it.

What archive can preserve a tree’s shade?

What photograph can restore an entire afternoon of strolling to a city?

The Entrance to Damascus, Airport Road, 1989.

A proposal awarded first place in the competition.

I leave it a proposal, as the record describes it.

And I imagine the task of an entrance:

To prepare the eye for the city.

To tell the returning traveler: come closer.

Here begins the distance that has continued to inhabit you.

The University… Buildings for Knowledge, and Generations to Carry It.

The Higher Language Institute and the Intermediate Engineering Institute at Damascus University, through his work in Abd al-Rauf al-Kasm’s office.

A door through which a student enters.

And through which a new possibility emerges.

At the language institute, I imagine words crossing thresholds.

At the engineering institute, I imagine a hand learning the precision of making.

This is how a university expands.

Through what it gives those who pass within it.

Daraa, Banias, Damascus, Latakia, Ain al-Fijeh.

Daraa Tourist Hotel.

The residential city for workers at the Banias refinery.

The Arab Cultural Center in Damascus.

The teachers’ tourist village in Latakia.

And the study for the entrance to the Ain al-Fijeh water tunnel.

I read these names, and the country’s map begins to move.

A guest arrives.

A worker returns.

A reader finds a seat.

A teacher rests beside the sea.

And water continues its journey toward homes.

How vast this profession is…

When it extends across people’s needs.

Riyadh… A Home for Syria’s Name.

The Syrian Embassy building, in collaboration with architects and engineers from the community committee established to build it.

I imagine a doorway in another country.

A Syrian stands before it, carrying documents.

Behind those documents, a life.

Here, a place acquires a double meaning.

A building in a city.

And an address for a distant homeland.

The Teacher… When Architecture Passes from One Hand to Another.

1980.At Damascus University, his teaching continued from his return in 1980.

1991.Head of the architecture department between 1989 and 1991, and a faculty council member between 1985 and 1991.

2010.Later, dean of the Faculty of Architecture from 2007 to 2010, and of the Faculty of Tourism from 2009 to 2010.

2005.At King Saud University, a lecturer from 1991 to 1994, and again from 1997 to 2005.

2006.At Kalamoon University, vice president for academic affairs from 2005 to 2006.

2017.At the Arab International University, vice dean from 2015 to 2017, then dean from 2017.

I read the positions.

Then look beyond them.

For a student waiting for an idea to be heard.

For a curriculum needing a window onto reality.

For a university whose knowledge must reach the street.

For academic leadership can change a city…

Before its architects graduate.

Consulting Units… A Bridge toward Construction.

He established Damascus University’s Consultations and Engineering Works unit, and later the Syrian Consultant Center for Engineering Services.

I imagine the university door opening onto a construction site.

Dust enters theory.

And theory steps down to test its shoes upon the ground.

There, questioning meets the resistance of material.

And knowledge discovers what it lacks.

Books… Buildings That Can Travel.

Functional Programs for Engineering Projects.”

Spatial Relationships: A Philosophical Approach to Architecture and Its Theories.”

Prospects for Developing Engineering Practice.”

And articles, translations, and reviews.

I place these titles upon my table.

Questions gather around them.

For whom do we build?

How can functions meet without lives colliding?

And how does practice advance…

If the hand merely repeats what it has memorized?

Professor Mamoun Al-Wareh,

As a son of this profession, I know some buildings end at their boundaries.

But a teacher’s influence crosses them.

It travels with a student to another city.

It enters an office you have never visited.

And stands beside a project you have never seen.

Then, at a moment of decision…

An architect stops drawing.

Remembers a question.

And restores the human being to their place.

There, the lesson extends.

There, I understand what it means for a lifetime to live within architecture.

To place a line upon paper… so that, years later, someone finds a place for their life.

Mamoun Al-Wareh shared the airport housing with Charles Kassab, remembered in When Absence Cast Its Shadow on the Plan, and worked in the office of Talal Akili, honoured in When Damascus Stood Behind a Ruler. The opera house whose construction drawings he worked on is the subject of Damascus Opera House: When the City Became Music.
