Charles Kassab: When Absence Cast Its Shadow on the Plan
Imad's tribute, in Arabic and English, to a Damascus architect and teacher, and to the buildings that keep his name.
By Architect Imad Darouich8 min read

Charles Kassab was a Syrian architect, born in Damascus in 1945 and died there in 2024, who graduated in 1968 among the first architecture students of Damascus University, worked with Michel Ecochard and Kenzo Tange, and founded Atelier de Damas with Huda Al-Assil. Imad's tribute to Charles Kassab begins at a teacher's drawing table, then reads his churches, towers and housing as places where his work goes on.

I am an architect.
Whenever I hold a pencil, I feel the hands of those who came before us.
Hands that have departed.
Yet the line remains warm.
Charles Kassab.
I place your name upon the page.
And Damascus stirs beneath it.
As though the city recognizes the signatures of its children.
As though stone preserves a fingerprint no rain can wash away.
From Damascus University, you entered the profession.
Then returned carrying the knowledge of the journey.
That alone is an image worth contemplating:
A door through which a student leaves.
And through which a teacher returns.
Between those two crossings, a lifetime learns the weight of a line.
I imagine the drawing table at the end of the day.
The students have gone.
The papers are still awake.
A city leans within one design.
And a roof searches for its column.
And a window waits for someone to rescue it from the wall.
Here begins the teacher’s responsibility.
To see fear hiding beneath the line.
And give the hand enough confidence to try again.
For the student draws a first building.
And unknowingly draws the contours of the self.
Charles,
A city is too vast for one architect to carry alone.
Hands converge around it.
Languages meet upon the page.
Then the sun arrives.
And tests what everyone has agreed upon.
I bring Ecochard’s name to mind.
Then Tange’s.
And between those names, I imagine a table wide enough for the world.
At its edge, Damascus.
Laying its history before the future.
Waiting for the encounter to be worthy of her.
Atelier de Damas.”
I read the name and see a city entering a workshop.
Hanging her cloak beside the door.
And sitting before the page.
In her hand, the key to an old house.
In her eyes, a place not yet built.
How much listening such an encounter requires.
How deeply the future must understand those who will inhabit it.
I know the labor of details.
A stair asking for a more precise rise.
And an entrance refusing to fall into place.
And an hour passing while a millimeter will not move.
Then the building is completed.
People move through it with ease.
They never know how often its maker stumbled so they would not.
That is why I salute the architect.
And salute the unseen part of the work.
The sleeplessness that became comfort for others.
The anxiety that became balance within a wall.
Then came the year of departure.
And the city continued its daily life.
A door opens.
A foot climbs a stair.
And a shadow travels across a facade.
Life goes on within the architect’s work.
Even when absence occupies his chair.
Professor Charles Kassab,
I leave you a window in this epic.
Overlooking a classroom whose lesson has not ended.
And a student erasing a line, then drawing it with confidence.
And Damascus, trying on the morning light.
There, I see the meaning of endurance.
For the hand to depart… while its legacy keeps opening doors.

St. Elias Church: Al-Tabbaleh, Damascus
The architecture of St. Elias Church, near the entrance to Dweila, is attributed to him.
Here, I see stone lowering its voice.
And the window becomes a path that prayer can follow.
A person enters, burdened by the world.
And finds a place where the soul is no longer asked to stand.
Muhradah Church
The Archive of Modern Architecture in Syria lists Muhradah Church among his built works.
In my imagination, the bell lifts the town by its shoulders.
And the walls gather the scattered pieces of peace.
This is how a building can hold a community.
Giving fellowship a roof, and hope an address.
Faculty of Economics: Damascus University
He contributed to its project within architect Talal Akili’s office.
Here, I cross from the profession of drawing into the life of knowledge.
I see a student climbing the stairs.
Carrying a small book.
Within him, a future heavier than his bag.
That is the awe of a university building.
To hold, every morning, what has not yet become reality.
Residential Complex for Damascus International Airport Workers
He worked on it with architect Mamoun Al-Wareh; the project shared second place in the 1980–1982 competition and was subsequently built.
Near the airport, homes learn the meaning of return.
There are those who help others depart.
Then return at day’s end, needing a door that knows them.
I salute architecture when it remembers them.
When it gives the weary hand a key.
Higher Education Graduates Association Building: Damascus
1982.His archive lists it as a project built in 1982.
I imagine it as a home for knowledge after it leaves the university.
Experience gathers beneath a roof.
And dialogue finds a chair waiting for it.
For architecture can build an opportunity for people to hear one another.
Tala Tower, Damascus, and Al-Fateh Tower, Known as Tripoli Tower, Libya
The archive lists both towers among his built projects.
I lift my eyes.
And see the line that left the page standing in the air.
Yet as an architect, I also look at its feet.
There, height is tested.
By the person crossing the entrance.
And by the city receiving its shadow.
The Presidential Palace and Tishreen Park: Damascus
He worked with Kenzo Tange on both projects, according to his biographical archive.
In the park, I pause before another meaning of construction.
To leave the earth a place in which to breathe.
To let a path become an unhurried walk.
And let a child find beneath a tree a space larger than fear.
Charles,
I read the names of these works.
And see a lifetime spread across places.
Some of it opens a door.
Some receives a prayer.
Some waits for a student.
You departed… and life kept entering through your lines.
Charles Kassab worked with the architect of Kenzo Tange: The Man Who Built a Bridge Between Ancient Japan and the City of the Future, and shared the airport workers' housing with Mamoun Al-Wareh, whose tribute is He Sets a Ruler upon Paper, and a City Rises. He worked on the Faculty of Economics in the office of Talal Akili, honoured in When Damascus Stood Behind a Ruler.
