The House That Refused Its Address: Hassan Fathy and Frank Lloyd Wright

A planner numbers a family's home 112 and orders it into its square; Hassan Fathy and Frank Lloyd Wright help the house find its tree and its stream.

Hassan Fathy (1900 to 1989) built in mud brick for Egyptian villagers, and Frank Lloyd Wright (1867 to 1959) called his idea of designing in harmony with people and the environment organic architecture. Imad's Kafkaesque story brings Hassan Fathy and Frank Lloyd Wright to a site about to be levelled, where an official assigns a family plot 112 and the house keeps moving back toward its tree and its stream.

A Note

An imagined Kafkaesque architectural story bringing together Frank Lloyd Wright and Hassan Fathy; the encounter, dialogue, and events are fictional, not quotations from them.

The Introduction

I went to inspect land where a new neighborhood would be built.

On the plan, it consisted of equal squares.

On the ground, I found a tree, a stream, and a man repairing an earthen wall.

The official said: We begin leveling the site tomorrow.

I asked: Where will the man go?

He pointed to a distant square.

He said: There. His number is one hundred and twelve.

The Epic

I approached the house.

A woman sat in the courtyard, with air moving around her.

She placed a glass of water before me.

She asked: Is there a place for this in the new house?

I thought she meant the glass.

But she pointed to the shade.

I opened the plan.

Clear rooms. Precise numbers.

And I could find no place for the evening she was sitting within.

Hassan Fathy arrived and placed a handful of earth on the sheet.

He said: This is where the house will begin.

The official brushed the earth away.

He said: We have approved materials.

Fathy mixed the earth with a little water.

He made a small arch from it.

Beneath the arch, shade appeared.

The woman reached toward it.

The arch grew above her head.

The official wrote: “Expansion beyond the plot boundaries.”

Beside the water, Frank Lloyd Wright was studying the rock.

He drew a horizontal line.

It extended over the stream and became a terrace.

We heard water beneath our feet.

The official said: This sound is not included in the specifications.

Wright bent at the terrace’s edge.

He said: It was here before the specifications.

The Turning

They ordered the house moved into its square.

They fixed the number one hundred and twelve to its door.

The wall moved slightly.

Then the courtyard stretched toward the tree.

And the terrace stretched toward the water.

Whenever they pushed it toward the paper’s boundaries, it returned in search of the land.

The official said: The house refuses its address.

I looked at the number on the door.

I said: Perhaps we gave it an address that does not describe where it belongs.

The official opened the residents’ register.

He asked the man: What do you want to keep?

He said: This tree. I planted it the day my daughter was born.

He asked the woman.

She said: The courtyard. My children come in the evening, and I want to sit among them.

Then he looked at me.

I spread the plan on the ground.

I drew the tree first.

Then the stream.

Then the woman’s place to sit.

And I began the house around them.

The Ending

Fathy raised the arch.

And Wright extended the terrace.

The tree remained where it was.

And the water kept flowing.

We checked the structure until it was safe, then opened the door.

The man and his wife entered.

In the evening, their children arrived.

The courtyard filled.

O Lord, help us see people’s lives before we draw their walls.

The number one hundred and twelve remained above the door.

But beneath it appeared a small sign written by the daughter:

Our home, beside the tree.”

Wright's real house over a stream is told in When the Waterfall Became Part of the House, and Fathy's real village in The Village That Refused to Inhabit the Plan. Wright's whole life is in Frank Lloyd Wright: The Architect Who Made the House Grow from the Earth.
