I. M. Pei: When the Pyramid Was Accused of Insulting History
Stone sits as judge and Paris brings the charges: I. M. Pei must defend a glass pyramid in the Louvre's courtyard before it is even built.

The Louvre Pyramid, the glass and metal entrance I. M. Pei designed for the Cour Napoléon in Paris, was presented to the public in 1984 and completed in 1989, after years of debate in which critics called it out of keeping with the Renaissance palace. Imad's story turns the Louvre Pyramid controversy into an imagined trial: the palace stone is judge, the old façade testifies, and Paris finally enters through the doorway it rejected.

This story is based on architect I. M. Pei’s design for the Grand Louvre project in Paris.
1983.I. M. Pei was appointed architect of the project in 1983.
He proposed a central underground lobby crowned by glass pyramids.
1989.The design provoked widespread opposition before the Pyramid opened in 1989.
The trial, dialogue, and scenes presented here are an imaginative literary interpretation exploring the conflict between memory and renewal.
One Parisian night, the Louvre Palace summoned I. M. Pei before the Court of History.
The architect entered the courtyard alone.
The ancient façades watched him through their windows. Stone sat upon the judge’s bench. Eight centuries stood behind it as silent witnesses. I am told that you intend to place a pyramid inside my heart. I want to give you an entrance.قال الحجر:Stone said:لدي مداخل كثيرة.I have many entrances.
But people are lost among them. The judge raised a massive dossier. Its pages were written in the voices of Paris. This pyramid is foreign. It is too modern. It insults the palace. It will cut the face of history with glass. How do you defend yourself?
I am not defending a shape. I am defending a path. The museum has filled with people. Its three wings await a heart capable of joining them. Why must this heart be a pyramid? The architect looked across the courtyard. He saw the kings who had passed through it.
The revolutions. The armies. The artists. And the visitors who had not yet been born. Because the pyramid stands upon the earth with its whole body. Then it rises toward a single point. It is weight becoming direction. A museum also begins with thousands of things. Then leads the human being toward a single question.
What remains of us? Silence entered the court. Then the ancient façade stepped forward to testify. I do not fear the new form. I fear that it will make me invisible. I. M. Pei produced a sheet of glass. It was so clear that it seemed not to exist.
I will not build a wall before you. I will build something through which people can still see you. Stone laughed. Every architect claims to respect the past. Then places his signature upon it. I. M. Pei moved closer to the judge. Respect does not mean imitating you. If I copied you, I would lie about both your time and mine. I will stand before you in my own language.
But I will keep you visible within it. The court summoned the Pyramid itself. It entered before it had been built. It was a skeleton of metal lines. Carrying walls made of air. Who are you? I am the entrance that will first appear to be a crime.
Then become familiar. Then become memory.قال القاضي:The judge said:أنت شفاف.You are transparent. How can you protect anything when you conceal nothing? Some buildings protect what lies within them through walls. I will protect history by allowing it to remain visible. I. M. Pei was sentenced to build beneath the earth. So he descended.
He excavated beneath the courtyard. And built a heart the city could not see. A heart that would distribute visitors among the palace wings. Above it, the Pyramid rose. They said it did not belong. It silently measured its place. They said it would hide the Louvre. It became more transparent. They said it would break history.
It joined the ancient sky to the modern ground. The day of inauguration arrived. Paris stood before the accused. The Pyramid did not shout. It did not ask to be acquitted. It gathered clouds upon its surfaces. And returned them to the sky transformed into geometry. The first visitor approached. He saw the palace through the glass. Then descended beneath the ground.
Another followed. Then a thousand. Then millions. With every step, the indictment lost a line. Until Paris entered through the doorway it had rejected. That night, the court returned. But the judge’s bench was empty. Stone stood before Glass. Neither was judging the other.
I thought you had come to erase my age. I came to let people enter it. Did you win? Architecture does not triumph by defeating what came before it. It triumphs when it creates between two ages a place where humanity can stand. I. M. Pei stood at a distance.
He watched the Pyramid shine beneath the Paris sky. But he did not see a monument to himself. He saw a question that had become a building. How do we enter the future without closing the door to the past? This is the power of architecture. It is not to make the new resemble the old. Nor to destroy the old merely to prove the courage of the new. It is to give every age its own voice. Then create between those voices a dialogue requiring no translator.
People may reject a building before they understand it. They may fear its image before experiencing its space. True architecture does not ask for immediate acceptance. It waits. It allows people to pass through it. And allows time to deliver its verdict. In the beginning, the Pyramid was accused. Then it became an entrance. Then it became an identity. Finally, it became part of the history it was accused of insulting.
Perhaps this is the architect’s task.
To see a doorway where others see only a closed courtyard.
To create clarity from fear.
And to stand between stone and glass until they learn how to speak.
People may put the new idea on trial.
But if it is honest.
And if it respects its place without surrendering to it.
Then perhaps a day will come when everyone enters through it.
Pei's whole career is told in I. M. Pei: The Epic of Geometry and Light, the pyramid's upside-down companion has its own poem, The Upside-Down Star: A Poem at the Louvre's Inverted Pyramid, and more landmarks are in the buildings and cities collection.
