Hassan Fathy: The Village That Refused to Inhabit the Plan

Cement sits as judge, mud brick takes the stand, and the poor of Gourna ask Hassan Fathy how often he sat down with them.

Cover art for the New Gourna village story: Hassan Fathy's portrait above domed mud-brick houses and palms, with an unrolled village plan, a mud brick and a pencil

New Gourna village was built between 1946 and 1952 on the West Bank of the Nile at Luxor, where Hassan Fathy designed mud-brick houses, a mosque and a market to rehouse the people of old Gourna, who strongly resisted the move. Imad's epic follows the project into an imagined court where cement presides, mud brick testifies and, at the end, the villagers themselves take the judge's seat.

When an Architect Tried to Build for the Poor with Dignity

An Epic Inspired by the Life of Hassan Fathy and the New Gourna Experiment

Disclaimer

This epic draws upon the life of Egyptian architect Hassan Fathy and the historical events surrounding the New Gourna project near Luxor, begun in the 1940s.

The trial, dialogue, and scenes in this text are part of an imaginative literary interpretation created to explore the architectural and human dimensions of that experiment.

On a hot morning in 1945, a brown file arrived at Hassan Fathy’s office.

It was heavy.

Not because it contained many papers.

But because an entire village was imprisoned inside it.

Upon its cover was written:

OLD GOURNA.

A village standing over the archaeological tombs of Luxor.

The government wants its residents relocated.

Required:

Build a new village.

At low cost.

As quickly as possible.

Hassan Fathy opened the file.

Hundreds of names emerged from it.

Men.

Women.

Children.

Craftspeople.

And families who had lived near the mountain for generations.

He did not see numbers.

He saw human beings.

At the bottom of the page, he found a question the ministry had not written:

How do you move a human being from their place?

Do you carry the body?

Or must you carry the memory as well?

That night, Hassan Fathy was summoned before the Court of Building Materials.

Cement sat upon the judge’s platform.

It was gray.

Hard.

Around it stood steel, glass, and fired brick.

Hassan Fathy entered.

He carried a block of earth.

The court laughed.

Cement asked:

Have you come to build a village?

Or to bury it?

Hassan Fathy placed the earthen brick upon the table.

قال:He said:

This is not a handful of dirt.

This is a material the people know.

It comes from their land.

And protects them from its heat.

Steel said:

But the poor want modern buildings.

Hassan Fathy replied:

The poor want good homes.

We have no right to sell them the appearance of modernity and make them pay for it throughout their lives.

The mud brick approached the witness stand.

It was small.

Its edges were cracked.

The court asked:

What can you carry?

قال:It answered:

I can carry a wall.

I can carry an arch.

And if the hand knows how to arrange me, I can carry a dome as well.

Cement said:

Who will teach the hands?

Hassan Fathy replied:

There are hands that have not yet forgotten.

He traveled to Nubia.

He sought builders who still knew how to construct domes and vaults with mud brick.

Those techniques did not require expensive timber formwork for their roofs.

The builder placed one brick above another.

Tilting each course slightly.

Then the vault rose from the wall.

Without a great machine.

Without material brought from a distant factory.

Knowledge lived within the hand.

But it was not written in the tender documents.

Hassan Fathy returned to Luxor.

He designed a village, not rows of boxes.

He drew narrow streets that offered shade.

Courtyards that gathered people.

A school.

A theater.

A market.

A mosque.

And houses that varied with the families.

He did not want one repeated model.

A human being is not a number to be repeated.

The village began to rise from the earth.

The walls were the color of the soil.

The domes appeared as though the earth were breathing.

Air entered through the courtyards.

Shadows moved with the sun.

For a moment, the dream seemed possible.

But the project file did not remain in the architect’s office.

It entered the corridors of administration.

It moved from one desk to another.

Each time, a house disappeared from it.

One official requested a signature.

Another requested a budget that never arrived.

A third demanded a speed the craft could not provide.

The project built one wall on the site.

The administration built two walls before it.

Then the people of Gourna arrived.

They did not enter the plan as lines enter paper.

They came with their memories.

With their fears.

With their livelihoods.

And with the graves of their ancestors.

They looked at the new village.

It was beautiful.

But beauty was not the only question.

Some did not want to leave their old homes.

Some did not trust the project.

Some needed a house suited to a way of life the plan did not fully understand.

That night, the court returned.

But Cement was no longer the judge.

The Poor Man sat upon the judge’s platform.

He did not have one face.

He carried all the faces of the village.

He asked Hassan Fathy:

You said you were building for me.

How many times did you sit with me?

Hassan Fathy answered:

I wanted to give you a dignified home.

The man said:

Dignity is not given.

Nor can an architect draw it alone.

Dignity begins when you ask me how I live.

Hassan Fathy replied:

I was fighting for you.

The man answered:

You were fighting expensive materials.

You were fighting the administration.

You were fighting an architecture that had forgotten climate.

But a human being is not a battle you can win on his behalf.

He must be a partner in it.

The unfinished house entered the court.

It had no door.

Half of its dome was open to the sky.

The court asked:

Who destroyed you?

The house answered:

No one destroyed me.

They simply stopped completing me.

And that is a slower way to die.

Hassan Fathy asked:

Did I fail?

The house answered:

The project failed to become the village you imagined.

But the question you raised did not fail.

Must the poor person’s house be ugly because its budget is small?

Must building materials come from factories he cannot afford?

Does progress require us to forget what the hands of our ancestors knew?

Can an architect build for people without building with them?

The court fell silent.

Even Cement lowered its head.

It was not guilty.

Nor was earth always innocent.

No material is moral by itself.

Justice lives in how it is used.

The verdict was delivered.

The court declared:

Hassan Fathy is found guilty.

Guilty of believing that beauty belongs to the poor.

Guilty of returning earth to the table of modern architecture.

And guilty of revealing that an inexpensive house may be costly if it humiliates its resident.

Hassan Fathy asked:

What is the sentence?

The court answered:

Your village will remain incomplete.

And your idea will continue haunting architects after you are gone.

New Gourna was not completed as he intended.

Parts of the project stopped.

Buildings were altered.

Some deteriorated over time.

But the village did not disappear.

The mosque remained.

The theater remained.

The domes continued carrying the traces of the hands that built them.

The project remained open like a wound in architecture’s conscience.

1989.Hassan Fathy died in 1989.

But he left the question of Gourna behind.

The question entered schools of architecture.

It crossed continents.

It reached generations seeking more humane and sustainable ways of building.

The world returned to earth.

Not because it was a poor material.

But because it recognized the knowledge hidden within it.

It returned to courtyards, shade, and natural ventilation.

Not as heritage decoration.

But as solutions shaped by centuries of experience.

This is the epic of Hassan Fathy.

The architect did not completely triumph within it.

Nor was the village completely defeated.

Both remained inside a single question.

For whom do we build?

With what materials?

Who has the right to define a good home?

We do not study Hassan Fathy to cover every building with a dome.

Nor do we return to the past to escape the future.

We study him to learn how living knowledge can be drawn from heritage.

We study climate.

Material.

Craft.

Cost.

And human dignity.

But we also learn Gourna’s most difficult lesson.

It is not enough to love the people.

You must hear them.

It is not enough to design for them.

You must design with them.

A house does not become a home when the architect finishes drawing it.

It becomes a home when its resident recognizes himself within it.

Place your hand upon the earth.

Do not ask how cheap it is.

Ask how much memory it carries.

Then sit with the person for whom you will build.

Do not open your plan first.

Open your ear.

The first material a project needs may not be earth.

It may be listening.

Fathy returns in an imagined working session, Who Can Afford to Live in Your Dream?, and in the poem Somewhere I Can Stop Leaving. His apprentice has a book of his own, Abdel-Wahed El-Wakil: When Architecture Becomes Memory.
