Cover of Tadao Ando: When Light Cut Through the Wall of Silence, a portrait of Tadao Ando above the Church of the Light, its concrete wall cut with a cross of daylight behind rows of benches

The Church of the Light is the chapel of the Ibaraki Kasugaoka Church in Ibaraki, Osaka Prefecture, completed in 1989 to a design by Tadao Ando, a former boxer who taught himself architecture; a cross is cut into the concrete wall behind the altar. Imad's epic follows Ando from the ring to this small commission, then puts the wall on trial in an imagined Court of Silence.

This story is based on the life of Japanese architect Tadao Ando and his design for the Church of the Light in Ibaraki, Osaka. 1989.The building was completed in 1989. The wall behind the altar was cut by a cross-shaped opening through which natural light enters the space. The trial, dialogue, and scenes presented here are an imaginative literary interpretation exploring the relationship between wall and light, and between humanity and silence.

Tadao Ando did not begin his life inside a school of architecture. He did not wait for a professor to grant him permission.كان ملاكمًا.He was a boxer. Inside the ring, he learned that distance could save the body. And that a small movement could change the fate of a confrontation. And that the emptiness between two blows is not empty. It is the place where decisions are made. He left the ring. But he kept its silence. He began studying architecture alone.

He traveled. He sketched the buildings he encountered. And measured them with his steps. He possessed no diploma declaring him an architect. He possessed a conviction that the wall was not created merely to remain closed. One day in Osaka, a small commission reached him. A modest church. A restricted site. And a budget that gave architecture no room for vanity.

Ando looked at the site. The city pressed against it. Noise waited beyond the walls. We need a place for prayer. Do you need a building? Or do you need a moment in which humanity separates from its noise? No one answered.

He drew a concrete rectangle. Then he drove an angled wall through its heart.قال المستطيل:The rectangle said:لماذا جرحتني؟Why have you wounded me? So that the human being enters you awake. No one will reach your interior in a straight line.

They will change direction. And leave the world behind. That night, the Wall summoned Tadao Ando before the Court of Silence. The chamber had no windows. Darkness sat upon the judge’s bench. Concrete stood as a witness. The city sat beyond the door, shouting. Why have you built thick walls? Ando answered:

To create within the city a place where the human being can hear the self.قال الجدار:The Wall said:إذن أنت تحتاج إليّ.Then you need me. Yes. But I do not trust you completely. The Wall grew angry.قال:It said:أنا أحمي الداخل.I protect the interior.

I exclude noise.أحمل السقف.I carry the roof. And give the place its boundaries. But a wall that permits nothing to pass may become a prison. What do you wish to let through? Ando pointed toward the light waiting outside the court. If light enters, I will cease to exist.

You will appear for the first time. Darkness does not reveal a wall. Light gives it a face. The court summoned Concrete. It entered cold. Gray. Bare.

People accuse you of harshness.قالت الخرسانة:Concrete answered:أنا لا أملك قلبًا.I possess no heart. Yet I can protect a heart standing within me.أنا ثقيلة.I am heavy. But the architect can allow light to lift me. Will you consent to being cut? Concrete fell silent. It knew that every opening begins with the loss of part of the body.

If the wound will give the place meaning, let it be made. Ando approached the wall behind the altar. He drew no image upon it. He did not cover it with gold. He did not conceal the concrete with ornament. He drew a vertical line. Then crossed it with a horizontal line. The Wall screamed.

Its body opened. Morning entered. It did not enter as a guest. It entered as a final verdict. It divided the darkness. And reached the floor of the church. A figure of light appeared. It was not suspended upon the wall. It was the wall after it ceased resisting the sky. Darkness said:

You have defeated me. I did not come to defeat you. Without you, no one would see me. Then we are not enemies? The first person entered the church.

The path met the angled wall. The visitor was forced to turn.كان ذلك الانعطاف صغيرًا.The turn was small. Yet it separated outside from inside. The person sat upon a wooden bench. And looked ahead. No window appeared. There was only a luminous wound in concrete. I thought I came to see a building.

You came to see what a building can allow to enter. The sun began to move. The light changed. In the morning, it was sharp. At noon, it became whole. At sunset, it began to withdraw. The church grew afraid.

What will remain of me when the light departs? Waiting. Architecture is not merely what we see. It is also what we miss when it disappears. Night arrived. The luminous form vanished.عاد الجدار داكنًا.The wall became dark again. Yet the person who had seen it was no longer the same. The light remained in memory.

The wound remained a doorway within him. The court returned at midnight. The Wall stood before Ando. You took a part of me. Yes. But you made my absence more important than my presence.

That is the nature of an opening. It is not something added to a wall. It is something removed so the world may enter. Is this architecture? Architecture is not always what we build. Sometimes it is what we have the courage to leave empty. Silence moved closer.

It was no longer a judge. It became a material. It sat between concrete and light. And made from them a place requiring no words. This is the power of architecture. To begin with a wall. Then ask what must be removed. To use a heavy material. Yet make the heaviest presence invisible.

To build silence. Then allow a single beam to speak. Tadao Ando did not need ornament. He had concrete. Emptiness. Shadow. Water. Wind. Light. Materials no architect can own.

He can only create a place for them. Boxing taught him that the body moves between blows. Architecture taught him that the spirit awakens between walls. No university granted him a diploma. The journey gave him eyes that did not trust the familiar. He did not build a large church. He built a small room. Then wounded its wall. And through it entered something greater than every building.

An architect may believe the task is to add things. Another wall. Another form. Another material. The Church of the Light says something different. Sometimes the greatest thing an architect can build is an opening. Sometimes a place does not need us to give it a voice. It needs only that we remove what prevents light from speaking. Ando stood before the church after its completion. The concrete was silent.

The wall was still.

But light passed through it.

Without a door.

Without permission.

Then the Wall understood the final verdict.

Its power did not lie in remaining whole.

Its power lay in the wound that allowed the sky to enter.

Ando faces Louis Kahn in When Light Taught Stone to Breathe and in The Court That Summoned Light, and Kahn's own museum of daylight is the subject of The Museum That Hid the Sun Within Its Roof. More buildings read through light fill the buildings and cities collection.
