The Epic of Civilization

After sixty years among books, faces and cities, Imad measures civilization by justice and mercy rather than towers.

Pyramids and towers fading behind a scale of justice, the idea at the heart of this reflection on the true meaning of civilization

After sixty years among books, faces and cities, Imad looks for the true meaning of civilization and finds it in justice, dignity and mercy rather than in towers, trains or satellites. He recalls that the Prophet Muhammad saw it in the justice of the Negus and Moses in freeing people from domination, and he closes with the questions every life must answer.

After sixty years of traveling through books, faces, and cities,

I never learned that civilization is measured by the height of towers.

Nor by the speed of trains.

Nor by the number of satellites orbiting the Earth.

For I have seen astonishing machines,

And devices that almost seem to think,

Yet beside them I also saw

Hearts growing colder.

The cities said to me:

Look at my towers.

I replied:

And where is your justice?

It said:

Look at my factories.

I answered:

And where is human dignity within them?

It said:

Look at my wealth.

I replied:

How many still sleep hungry beneath your shadow?

Civilization is not stone upon stone.

Nor steel upon steel.

Nor a larger screen replacing a smaller one.

Civilization is when truth is stronger than power.

When justice stands above convenience.

When human beings are worth more than profit.

Muhammad ﷺ did not see civilization in palaces.

He saw it in the justice of the Negus.

Moses did not see greatness in Pharaoh's pyramids.

He saw it in freeing human beings from the domination of other human beings.

How many nations built temples and palaces.

Then vanished as if they had never existed.

And how many unknown shepherds

Changed history through a single noble value.

The pyramids are magnificent.

And the Taj Mahal is beautiful.

And the Leaning Tower is remarkable.

Yet all of them remain stone.

But justice,

Is the structure that never collapses.

And mercy,

Is the civilization that never grows old.

And what has afflicted our nation

Was not a failure of intellect.

But a failure of direction.

We did not lose when a factory fell behind.

We lost when our morals fell behind.

Nor when others surpassed us in technology.

But when we drifted away from the meaning of the message.

A day will come

When every machine will stop.

When every screen will go dark.

When every title will disappear.

And only one question will remain.

How much justice did you leave behind?

How much goodness did you plant?

How many lives did you elevate?

Only then

Does the true definition of civilization begin.
