Spiral Hymns for the Romanesco Broccoli

An architect looks at a Romanesco broccoli and sees a dome before the first mosque and a city before the first street.

The spiralling green peaks of a Romanesco broccoli, the subject of this Romanesco broccoli poem

This Romanesco broccoli poem treats the vegetable as a geometric revelation, a green manuscript in which every spiral gives birth to a smaller one. Imad imagines Gothic builders and the masters of Andalusia studying its form for their muqarnas, and he sees in it architecture before architecture: proof that beauty is discovered in creation before anyone makes it.

You are not a fruit.

You are not a flower.

You are not merely a vegetable resting quietly in a market basket.

You are a geometric revelation.

A green manuscript written by the hand of creation.

A silent theorem growing beneath the sun.

O Romanesco.

How did mathematics learn to bloom?

How did geometry become edible?

How did the hidden laws of the universe choose your body as their most elegant classroom?

Every spiral within you mirrors another spiral.

Every tower repeats itself.

Each summit gives birth to a smaller summit.

Every smaller summit carries the memory of the whole.

You are infinity practicing humility.

You are repetition without boredom.

Order without tyranny.

Complexity without confusion.

The architects of old would have knelt before your symmetry.

The builders of Gothic cathedrals would have traced your contours.

The masters of Andalusia would have hidden your secrets within their muqarnas.

The mathematicians would have spent lifetimes chasing the equations sleeping inside your skin.

O green constellation of ascending prayers.

You rise like a thousand miniature minarets.

Calling not for worship of stone.

But for wonder.

Each peak points upward.

Not to glorify itself.

But to remind us that every journey begins with a single form repeated faithfully.

You teach us that greatness is not always found in size.

But in pattern.

Not in noise.

But in harmony.

Not in power.

But in proportion.

When I look at you.

I do not see food.

I see architecture before architecture.

A mosque before the first dome.

A city before the first street.

A drawing before the first pencil touched paper.

You are a cathedral of numbers.

A sanctuary of ratios.

A palace where angles pray.

And curves recite ancient hymns.

The light moves across your surface as though reading a sacred text.

Shadow follows shadow.

Spiral follows spiral.

Until the eye surrenders.

And the soul begins to listen.

Romanesco.

You belong not only in gardens.

But in museums.

Not only on tables.

But in schools of architecture.

Not only in kitchens.

But in studios where artists search for the language of beauty.

For you reveal a forgotten truth.

Beauty is not manufactured.

It is discovered.

It already exists within the hidden grammar of creation.

Perhaps the greatest lesson you offer is this.

The universe does not fear repetition.

The stars repeat.

The waves repeat.

The seasons repeat.

The heartbeat repeats.

And through that repetition, life becomes music.

O Romanesco.

Temple of mathematics.

Garden of sacred geometry.

Living hymn of spirals and light.

You remind us that God did not place beauty only in mountains.

Or oceans.

Or galaxies.

He placed it also in a bowl of green.

Waiting quietly.

For someone willing to look.

For someone willing to understand.

For someone who sees beyond form.

And discovers the architecture hidden within creation.
