Paul Chiniarah: When Shade Was Summoned to Testify to the Justice of Light
Imad's tribute, in Arabic and English, to a Damascus architect and teacher who studied heat, light and the materials of the wall.
By Architect Imad Darouich10 min read

Paul Chiniarah is a Syrian architect, born in 1942, who graduated from Damascus University in 1965 among its first architecture students, studied further in France and taught at its faculty of architecture, according to the Archive of Modern Architecture in Syria. Imad's tribute to Paul Chiniarah moves through his projects, from the 1967 Damascus bus station competition to unbuilt workers' housing in Barzeh, and asks what light and shade owe the person living inside a plan.
Note: This epic tribute to architect Dr. Paul Chiniarah draws on his biography and projects documented by the Archive of Modern Architecture in Syria, and his writings on perspective and architectural environment. Proposals retain their status and collaborators their roles; the poetic scenes and imagery are my own reflections, not quotations attributed to him.
I am an architect.
I know the sun enters through the window.
But I also know…
That a careless line can turn it into punishment.
A room gleaming in a photograph.
Inside it, a person sweating with exhaustion.
A facade applauded by the eyes.
Behind it, a body paying the price of that applause.
Here, I set down my ruler.
And ask the light to give its testimony.
I write the name…
And the angle of vision shifts.
A door that seemed distant draws near.
And a mass that seemed silent…
Reveals imprisoned air.
As though architecture, when understood, sheds its skin.
And shows us what happens within.
1942… The Beginning of a Life That Would Learn to Read Space.
Then Damascus University.
The architecture department of the Faculty of Fine Arts.
And in 1965, graduation among its early cohorts.
I imagine a generation carrying its drawings…
Before a country learning a new architectural language.
Every building a possibility.
And every possibility asking someone to answer for it.
The profession was opening its doors.
And those entering had to understand…
That behind every door is a life.
Damascus… The City That Enters the Plan but Cannot Be Contained by It.
He began his work at the Damascus municipality.
During the period of Ecochard’s work on the city’s master plan.
I imagine a map spread across a table.
Fingers pointing.
And streets awaiting their new names.
Yet beneath the paper, I hear a vendor calling.
And water crossing a courtyard.
And a mother telling her child: do not go far.
How do we draw all of this?
And where, within the map’s legend, do we place…
A symbol for belonging?
France… Then a Return, So the Questions Could Resume Their Work.
After service in the Military Works administration, he entered teaching.
1974.Damascus University sent him for postgraduate studies in France until 1974.
Then he returned.
I imagine knowledge beside him like a window carried home from a journey.
But the wall here is different.
And the sun is different.
And people have their own ways of opening the morning.
Here begins the test.
For knowledge to find its place…
Without displacing the people who belong there.
Geometric Perspective… The Eye Is Responsible for What It Believes.
He wrote a book called “Geometric Perspective.”
Before that title, I see a lesson larger than vanishing lines.
Two parallel lines draw closer in the image.
And the mind knows they do not meet.
What an eye this is…
Capable of seeing the world.
And capable of deceiving its owner.
I think of the architect enchanted by a perspective drawing.
Placing a tree to beautify a corner.
And a tiny person to reveal the building’s grandeur.
Then I ask:
What if the person grew larger within the drawing?
What if that person asked for a seat?
And shade?
And a path that could be crossed without exhaustion?
Then the second perspective begins.
The eye level of the person who inhabits.
Material… What the Facade Conceals from the Photograph.
In his research on selecting building and cladding materials through their environmental properties…
Heat becomes part of the question.
In my imagination, I reach toward a wall.
It gives me back an entire day of sunlight.
A material that has stored what passed over it.
Another that allowed it through.
Behind both, a body trying to rest.
I imagine the facade entering a courtroom.
Its beautiful photograph hanging upon the wall.
And the resident standing to say:
I was here in August.
The room falls silent.
For the photograph did not carry the room’s heat.
And the perspective drawing did not sweat.
Here, I understand the weight of science in architecture.
It enters where eloquence cannot cool the air.
Damascus Terminal, 1967… An Order for Restless Movement.
A competition proposal awarded an honorable mention.
A rectangular volume.
And a canopy extending toward the departure platform.
A market outside the main route to reduce obstruction to pedestrians.
And a separate hotel.
I read the arrangement…
And see a traveler carrying a bag in one hand.
With the other, trying to hold onto a departure time.
Where is the ticket?
Where is the platform?
And where is the face that will raise a hand at departure?
In a terminal, clarity becomes compassion.
For a person taking leave…
Does not also need to lose the way.
Barzeh, 1982–1983… Homes That Remained in the Time of Possibility.
An unbuilt workers’ housing project.
I pause at that description.
Unbuilt.
As though ink had known the house…
But no resident ever did.
I imagine a child waiting at the edge of the plan.
Wanting to know where the bedroom will be.
But the page is folded.
And the question remains within.
How many homes inhabit an architect’s archive?
And how many windows kept looking…
Without ever being opened?
The Central Library, 1985–1991… A Place for Knowledge That Never Found Its Ground.
An unbuilt competition proposal for Damascus University.
I imagine books waiting.
Shelves never assembled.
And stairs never climbed by a person carrying a reference book.
And a seat above which no student ever bent.
An unbuilt library has a doubled silence.
The silence of reading.
And the silence of those who never reached it.
Then I find his name writing on library architecture in the Arab Encyclopedia.
And see the question seeking another door.
When a building does not become stone…
Knowledge may continue building it in language.
Maarat Saidnaya, 1993–1996… Hospitality as a Test of Place.
The tourist hotel the archive names “Sheraton.”
A built work.
And I imagine a guest setting down a bag.
Looking through the window.
Then sitting down.
An ordinary moment.
Yet it tests so much of what we have drawn.
Does the light arrive gently?
Does the room offer rest?
And can a stranger feel…
That the place has prepared room for them?
Douma, 1994–1995… A Home for the Profession.
The Engineers’ Syndicate offices in Rural Damascus.
Another built work.
I imagine engineers entering with their files.
Every file wanting to become reality.
And every reality needing someone to examine it.
Here, the profession sits before itself.
Asking about precision.
And integrity.
And the distance between what was signed…
And what ought to be built.
The Conference Complex… An Idea Bearing More Than One Signature.
Paul Chiniarah.
Nawras al-Daqer.
Raif Muhanna.
Ibrahim Hola.
1979.Names documented by the archive as the winning team in the International Conferences Complex competition, through a newspaper reference from 1979.
I leave the names together.
For a great idea must have room for its collaborators.
And fairness is part of accurate documentation.
As it is part of precise construction.
The Teacher… His Longest-Lived Project.
He returned to teaching after France.
2003.He retired in 2003.
Then teaching continued through selected courses and other universities.
2010…And in the record of a 2010 workshop…
He appears as dean of the Faculty of Architecture at the Arab International University.
I imagine one studio extending beyond another.
One generation handing the ruler to another.
And small ideas asking for a chance to be tested.
A student’s project may be fragile.
But the question it carries…
May be the beginning of a city not yet born.
That is why the teaching table seems to me a workshop of immense consequence.
For what is said there…
May return twenty years later in the form of a street.
Dr. Paul Chiniarah,
I salute you from within this profession.
From the place of the pencil that must think before it moves.
And from the place of the window…
Whose beauty alone cannot be enough.
I salute research when it lays its hand upon a wall’s heat.
And teaching when it opens a walkable path for imagination.
I am an architect.
I return to my table.
I draw a room.
Then set the pencil down for a moment.
I enter it in my imagination.
I sit where a person will sit.
I wait for noon.
And listen to the air.
There…
Architecture steps forward into its true examination.
Let the light be beautiful.
And let the shade be just.
And between them, let the human being find a place in which to live.
Raif Muhanna, named beside Paul Chiniarah on the winning team of the 1979 conference complex competition, has his own tribute in The Man Who Made the Earth's Weight a Roof for Hope, and Imad remembers another Damascus teacher in Youssef Abu Hadid: My Teacher, Who Left a City in My Hands. More lives in building are in the architects collection.
