A Ship Searching for God: An Ibn Fadlan Poem
A television series about a dragon-prowed ship leads Imad to Ibn Fadlan and to the victims that history forgets.

Imad wrote this Ibn Fadlan poem after watching a television series about a warship with dragon heads on its bow, and then reading Ibn Fadlan on an age when strength was the only language people shared. He sees empires born from fear, gods carved by the hands that kneel to them, and a memory that keeps the names of victors while losing the victims.
I did not watch a television series...
I watched humanity.
Every sea begins with water,
And ends inside the human heart.
They called it a ship.
But I,
Saw an armed idea.
Dragon heads crowned its bow,
Yet the true monster
Was hidden within.
Every empire,
Was born from an ancient fear.
Then claimed it was born from glory.
A sword never builds civilization.
It merely postpones its collapse.
I saw kings
Carving gods with their own hands,
Then kneeling before them.
How strange humanity is.
It worships what it creates,
Then fears what it worships.
Every stone in history,
Carries the name of a killer,
And the name of a victim,
At the same time.
When I read Ibn Fadlan,
I did not read merely about men.
I read an age
Where strength
Was the language everyone spoke.
Fire knows no religion.
Nor does the sea know nationality.
But blood...
Always bears the same color.
The most dangerous thing about history,
Is not the wars.
But turning them
Into songs.
More dangerous than swords,
Is a memory
That forgets the victims,
Yet remembers the victors.
I left the story,
With greater respect
For facts,
And less admiration
For legends.
History does not need
New heroes.
It needs eyes
That dare to look
At the truth...
Before it becomes
Another legend.
