The Trial of the Twenty-Second Century

History will not judge our palaces, towers or inventions, only what we did to the weak and to the truth.

By Architect Imad DarouichUpdated 2 min read

A vast courtroom built from ruins, with History as the judge, the scene of this court of history poem

This court of history poem begins when Imad receives a summons sealed by Time itself. He arrives at a courtroom built from the ruins of empires, where pharaohs, Romans, kings, sultans and presidents sit in the dock like frightened students, and History, robed in centuries, announces that it will judge what they did to humanity, to the weak and to justice.

I am Imad Darouich.

On a morning unlike any other.

I received a summons sealed by Time itself.

It bore no court name.

It carried no nation’s seal.

It simply read:

Mandatory appearance before the Court of History."

I raised my eyes toward the sky.

It was covered with archives.

Clouds made of ancient documents.

Lightning flashing between pages of books.

Thunder sounding like historians arguing.

I arrived at the court at sunset.

It was larger than all continents.

Built from the ruins of empires.

And the bones of forgotten wars.

And the dreams of millions whose names were never recorded.

Civilizations sat inside the defendant’s cage.

The Pharaohs stared at the floor.

The Romans hid their faces behind maps.

I saw kings, sultans, and presidents.

Sitting side by side like frightened students.

Then the judge entered.

He was not a human being.

Nor was he an angel.

It was History itself.

He wore a robe woven from centuries.

Upon his shoulders rested the dust of thousands of cities.

In his eyes reflected every battle ever fought.

And every cry of the oppressed.

And every dream left unfinished.

He struck his gavel.

And all ages trembled.

Calendars fell from the walls.

Clocks stopped moving.

Then he spoke with a voice that made the stars tremble:

Today we shall not judge what you built."

We shall not judge your palaces."

Nor your towers."

Nor your inventions."

Silence filled the court.

Even the civilizations stopped breathing.

Then he continued:

We shall judge what you did to humanity."

We shall judge what you did to the weak."

We shall judge what you did to truth."

And we shall judge what you did to justice."

Only then

Did I understand why I had been summoned.

I was not a witness to history.

I was a witness against it.
