The Wall That Carried a Scream Europe Could Not Hear: Picasso's Guernica

A ruined house, a mother, a horse and a bull put Picasso on trial, and he answers with a wall that no bomb can bring down.

Imad's cover for his prose poem on the Guernica painting: Picasso, brush raised, paints black and white figures of a horse, a bull and screaming faces on a cracked wall above the ruins of a town

Pablo Picasso painted Guernica at his Paris home in 1937, in answer to the bombing of the Basque town on 26 April by Nazi Germany's Condor Legion and Fascist Italy, and showed it in the Spanish pavilion of the Paris International Exposition; it now hangs in the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid. Imad's prose poem retells the making of the Guernica painting as a trial where a ruined house, a mother, a horse and a bull question the painter.

1937.This story is based on Guernica, painted by Pablo Picasso in 1937.

The painting was created for the Spanish Pavilion at the Paris International Exposition. It responded to reports of the bombing of the Basque town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. Photographer Dora Maar documented the work throughout its creation. The trial, dialogue, and scenes presented here are an imaginative literary interpretation exploring the human tragedy carried by the painting. On April 26, 1937, Guernica awoke as a town. It went to sleep as a wound. It was market day. Doors opened.

Streets filled. People placed bread upon tables. No one knew the sky had prepared a roof of fire above them. The aircraft arrived. They did not see people’s names.رأت أهدافًا.They saw targets. They did not see homes. They saw marks upon a map. The bombs fell. Walls collapsed.

Windows became fragments. Streets became corridors without exits. A mother ran carrying her child. But the city collapsed faster than her feet could move. A terrified horse entered the smoke. It searched for solid ground. But found stones falling from beneath the world. A woman’s voice rose. Those far away did not hear it.

Yet the scream remained suspended above the ruins. It waited for a wall capable of carrying it. In Paris, Picasso stood before an empty canvas. He had been commissioned to create a work for the Spanish Pavilion. He had ideas. But they possessed no necessity. The canvas was white. Innocent of history. Then the newspapers arrived.

Picasso opened their pages. Smoke emerged from them. Dust from Guernica fell across his studio floor. He read the report. Then looked at the canvas. It was no longer white. It had become a wall that survived the bombing. The Wall said to him:ضعهم هنا.Place them here.

Picasso answered:من؟Whom? Those who found no grave. Those whose homes collapsed upon their names. Those who became numbers before their bread had cooled. Picasso took up charcoal.رسم رأسًا.He drew a head. Then erased it. He drew a body.

Then broke it into angles. The bodies could not return whole. They had returned from a shattered town. That night, Guernica summoned Picasso before the Court of Ruins. The courtroom had no roof. The aircraft had taken it. The Ruined House sat upon the judge’s bench. The shattered windows stood as witnesses. The ground carried footprints that ended without warning.

Where were you when I fell?قال بيكاسو:Picasso answered:كنت في باريس.I was in Paris.قال البيت:The House said:هل سمعتنا؟Did you hear us? Your voices reached me late. Every voice arrives late to those who were not beneath the bombs.

The Mother stepped forward. She carried a motionless child. Do not paint me beautifully. Do not make my grief suitable for museum walls. Do not arrange my scream.اترك فمي مفتوحًا.Leave my mouth open. Wider than the room. Greater than the viewer’s ability to endure.

I will paint you without color.قالت:She asked:لماذا؟Why? Because color might make the massacre appear beautiful. I will let black put white on trial. And gray will become the dust covering the distance between them. The Horse entered the court. Its body was pierced by fear.

What did you see? The Horse opened its mouth. An entire street emerged. Burning houses. Running feet. Doors searching for their walls.قال الحصان:The Horse said:لا ترسمني حيوانًا.Do not paint me merely as an animal.

Paint within my body the terror of every creature unable to understand why it is being killed. Then the Bull entered. It stood in the corner of the court. It confessed nothing. What do you represent? I will not give you a single answer.قد أكون القوة.I may be power. I may be brutality.

I may be a people still standing before destruction.دعوا الرمز مفتوحًا.Leave the symbol open. War itself wears many faces. A Woman carrying a lamp appeared. She extended her head through a window without a wall.قالت:She said:بحثت عن الناجين.I searched for survivors. The light was weaker than the smoke.

Why did you continue carrying it? Because darkness does not require a total victory. It needs only that we agree to walk without a lamp. An electric lamp entered above the painting.كان يشبه عينًا.It resembled an eye. A cold eye. Seeing everything. The House asked:

Did you witness what happened? Yes. Why did you remain silent? Because sight without conscience is not testimony. It is merely surveillance. Picasso looked at the canvas.

He understood that the painting required no window. The catastrophe had entered from every direction. There was no front or back. No inside or outside. Architecture collapsed into a single plane. The ceiling became the floor. The wall became a door. The door became a mouth. The mouth became a screaming city. Picasso began to paint.

He worked rapidly. The speed was not haste. It was an attempt to arrive before oblivion covered the ruins. Dora Maar photographed the process. She recorded the stages. Figures appeared. Then changed. Forms disappeared. Others were born.

The painting built itself upon the ruins of its own possibilities. Every photograph I take preserves a layer the next one will bury. Even a painting requires a witness. The wall grew. It became wider than a human being. Taller than comfort. The viewer could no longer look from a safe distance. The viewer had to face the tragedy at human scale.

You have gathered everyone inside one room. Because a bomb does not respect the privacy of rooms. It mixes the child’s room with the kitchen. The bed with the street. And the human body with the stones of home. Your painting does not rebuild us.

Picasso replied:لا.No. Art cannot return a wall to its place. Nor return a child to a mother’s arms. But it can prevent the crime from possessing complete silence. The painting was completed. It entered the Spanish Pavilion in Paris. The exposition around it celebrated technology and progress. Progress toward what?

If the machine can fly faster. And carry larger bombs. Has humanity become more civilized? Or has death merely become more efficient? Visitors stood before it. Some saw chaos. Some saw rage. Yet those who looked longer heard something. A scream emerging from no single figure.

The entire painting was a mouth. Afterward, Guernica traveled. It crossed Europe. It crossed the ocean. It remained for many years in New York. Picasso refused to allow it to return to Spain while dictatorship endured. The painting remained in exile. Like a city unable to return to itself. Picasso died before its return. His wish remained its guardian.

In 1981, Guernica returned to Spain. It did not return as the town it had once been. It returned as a memory the size of a wall. The country whose wound it carried received it.قالت اللوحة:The painting said:لقد عدت.I have returned. But those I carry did not. This is the power of art. Not to make war beautiful.

But to make the world’s beauty impossible for a moment, so we may see what we have done to it. To transform canvas into a wall of testimony. Color into evidence of a crime. Line into an exposed nerve. Composition into a building whose rooms collapsed upon one another. Guernica is a ruined architecture reconstructed inside a painting. It was not rebuilt for us to inhabit. It was rebuilt to deny us comfort before destruction. Every body within it is a broken column. Every mouth is a window through which the scream pours.

Every eye is a lamp asking why the world witnessed and did not intervene.

At the end of the trial, the Ruined House stood before Picasso.

قال:It said:

You did not return my roof.

Picasso answered:

I could not.

Nor did you return its inhabitants.

قال:He replied:

I could not.

The House asked:

Then what did you do? Picasso pointed toward the painting. I built for you a wall no bomb could demolish. A wall standing before every war yet to come. And saying to anyone who raises a weapon above a city:قد تهدم البيت.You may destroy the house. You may kill the body. But if suffering finds an artist unafraid to face it, you will not own the ending.

The victim will remain a witness. The city will remain standing. Even if nothing remains but a scream suspended upon a wall.
