Cover of Rooftops: Damascus rooftops with stone stairs, red geraniums, drying laundry and a red kite above minarets and domes

Damascus, the capital of Syria, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, and its walled old city has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. Imad's Rooftops climbs from the dark of its houses to the Damascus rooftops, where laundry, potted basil, kites and mattresses tell the life below, and ends with a family coming back to a roof whose stairs have been repaired.

A Contemporary Architectural Epic

Introduction

When alleys narrow, Damascus finds an opening above.

Stone stairs rise from the houses’ darkness.

At the final step, the world breathes wider.

Below, doors bear the weight of keys and passing faces.

Above, the sky asks you for no proof.

The Epic

On rooftops, houses unfold their inner lives.

A small shirt holds its wearer’s shoulders.

The wind lifts it; the child seems airborne.

Beside it, a black dress dries beneath sunlight.

Even grief needs somewhere to shed its dampness.

Mattresses lie together on concrete still warm at night.

Families sleep beneath a roof without columns.

The smell of bread arrives from a distant window.

Darkness becomes a place the heart can inhabit.

At the edge, a child tests his kite’s string.

Whenever the wind pulls, he loosens his grip.

He learns that flight needs room and trust.

His kite rises above the small property lines.

Walls cannot divide this height.

On a neighboring roof, a woman waters basil.

Water passes through her fingers into soil.

A garden releases its scent from a small rusty tin.

This is how Damascus reclaims ground taken by buildings.

Handful by handful, it raises orchards above its rooms.

Then rain comes, and the rooftops sound different.

Sheet metal rings; water falls softly upon stone.

Maps without borders run down the walls.

The city washes its face without closing its eyes.

But some rooftops have lost their stairs and families.

They remain suspended above rooms turned into air.

There, emptiness grows heavier than concrete.

Clotheslines resemble sentences whose writer was interrupted.

They wait for a shirt, a hand, another ordinary day.

And when a foot returns to the repaired stairs,

It tests the first step before climbing onward.

The climber carries a mattress, a pot, a water pitcher.

Small things, yet they reclaim space for life.

Then a line is stretched between two standing walls.

The first piece of laundry appears above the rubble.

Ending

When that shirt rises in the air,

The sky regains one of its old inhabitants.

The rooftop becomes a place to await morning peacefully.

Below, the building is still unfinished.

But tonight, someone will sleep peacefully upon it.

The courtyard houses beneath these roofs open in The Epic of Houses and Arches: Part Three of the Damascus Epic, and the city's hours turn in Damascus by Day and Night: Part Seven of the Damascus Epic. Down in the old city, Khans of Strangers follows a traveler into a Damascus khan.
