Three Doors Opened Only by the Wise

Know the limits of your knowledge, your tongue and your desires: three short counsels that build a whole person.

Three old wooden doors in a quiet courtyard, the three counsels of Imam Malik

This short poem reads the three counsels of Imam Malik as three doors that open only for the wise. The first is to say I do not know when asked about what you do not know, the second to let silence be your longest speech among people, and the third to leave the table while you still desire more, a counsel Imad extends to every appetite in life.

They said Imam Malik

compressed the world into three sentences.

But I saw something else…

Each time I read this counsel,

I felt I was reading humanity's trial record.

The first door…

If asked what you do not know, say: I do not know.

It is not the defeat of the mind,

It is the triumph of truth.

For the greatest disasters,

Began with false certainty.

The second door…

When you sit among people,

Let silence be your longest speech.

Noise gathers applause,

Silence gathers insight.

If they are right, you are among them.

If they err, you are spared their mistake.

The third door…

Leave the table while you still desire more.

The counsel is not about food alone,

It is about every desire in life.

Whoever never knows when to stop,

Will never know when he is saved.

Three simple teachings…

Yet they build a complete human being.

Know the limits of your knowledge.

Guard the limits of your tongue.

Master the limits of your desires.

For the true prison,

Is not built from stone,

But from desire that never learns enough..
