A Dome Spacious Enough for a Tear: Gaudí and Pope John Paul II

A Muslim architect reflects on Gaudí's branching columns and John Paul II's religious presence, and draws a seat for someone who comes in weeping.

Antoni Gaudí (1852 to 1926) designed the Sagrada Família in Barcelona, whose interior columns branch to carry the roof, and Pope John Paul II led the Catholic Church from 1978 until his death in 2005. Imad's literary vision sets Gaudí and Pope John Paul II side by side without implying any meeting. Writing as a Muslim and an architect, he asks how a place of worship can receive the grateful, the doubtful and the grieving.

The Introduction

I am Imad Darouich.

When I enter a place of worship, I raise my head toward what has been built.

Then I look at the faces.

Someone has arrived with gratitude.

Another carries a question.

A third has no words for their pain.

Architecture must know how to receive them all.

The Epic

With Gaudí, the column branches.

Stone rises as though remembering the tree.

I lift my eyes among the branches, and weight takes on another form.

The roof is supported.

Yet the eye sees it as a forest rising.

I feel nature has entered the building with the logic of its growth.

Then light passes through colored glass.

It reaches the floor carrying color.

It passes across a shoulder.

It touches a face whose story it does not know.

Here I think of the small justice light creates.

It does not ask the seated person about their status.

It does not distinguish costly clothing from clothing worn by time.

When the bright patch arrives, it grants the surface its presence.

Before John Paul II’s religious presence, I contemplate the responsibility of words.

A word heard by a burdened person.

It may help them stand.

Or deepen their feeling of being far away.

So I place the pulpit in my plan and consider the distance between it and the last row.

Does the voice reach clearly?

Does the listener retain the right to silence?

I want a place that preserves the dignity of speech and protects the vulnerability of those hearing it.

I am Muslim.

I enter this reflection through my faith and my profession.

I recognize in the human need for mercy a responsibility familiar to me.

Someone arriving in tears needs a place that preserves their privacy.

Someone struggling to stand needs a seat.

Someone exhausted by the journey needs to reach the door without humiliation.

Between Gaudí’s column and the religious leader’s word, I search for that place.

Where the soul can grow quiet while the body remains cared for.

I do not want height to make me forget the person beneath it.

Nor ornament to conceal a door needing repair.

I want beauty the weary person can use.

And light the eye can bear.

And sound that does not drive quiet away.

The Ending

O Lord, make my knowledge a path toward mercy, and keep it from becoming a means of arrogance.

Through Gaudí, I contemplate stone lifting the gaze through what it learned from nature.

Through John Paul II’s presence, I contemplate religious speech’s responsibility toward human life.

Then I return to the roof.

I calculate it.

Beneath it, I draw a seat to the side.

Someone may sit there weeping.

I will not know the reason for their tear.

Yet I want the place to have made room for it before it arrived.

Gaudí's life and faith fill Antoni Gaudí: The Architect Who Taught Stone to Pray, and his basilica speaks for itself in Sagrada Família: The Throne of Light Unfinished. More writing on prayer and sacred space is in the faith and spirit collection.
