The Epic of Cities Forgetting Their Heart

True religion, Imad writes, is an open courtyard that souls enter without guards.

An open courtyard under a Damascene dome, the image behind this poem about religious tolerance

This poem about religious tolerance compares true faith to an open Andalusian courtyard and an old Damascene dome that gathers every voice under one light. Imad calls sectarianism a sick architecture built on fear, recalls the Damascene stone that embraced Muslim, Christian and Jew alike, and finds the hope of the world in a simple person who sees God in everyone.

Any doctrine

Building walls between two souls

Is no temple of truth.

And any doctrine

Turning humans into borders

Is architecture of sacred fear.

True religion

Resembles an open Andalusian courtyard

Where souls enter without guards.

And resembles an ancient Damascene dome

Gathering voices beneath one light.

God

Did not create humans as isolated floors

Inside towers of modern hatred.

But created them as facing windows

Exchanging light and longing.

I always felt

That sectarianism is sick architecture

Built upon historical terror.

Its minarets rise without prayer

And its domes lack mercy.

Even authentic stones

Were more tolerant than humans.

Ancient Damascene stone

Embraced Muslim, Christian, and Jew

Without questioning their identities.

And ancient stained windows

Never discriminated between eyes.

And the sea

When touching city harbors

Does not question ships about beliefs.

So how can man do so?

Religion rejected by reason

Eventually becomes a museum of

terror.

Faith producing no mercy

Resembles a palace without windows.

But God

Has always been greater than doctrines

And more beautiful than petty wars.

God is love.

Ethics are the greatest spiritual cathedral.

And believers are but brothers

Not warring maps.

I looked upon modern cities

And felt concrete weeping silently.

Skyscrapers rise every single day

While humanity shrinks within.

Glass towers became increasingly radiant

While souls retreated into darkness.

And because of this

No new politician will save the world

Nor a prophet of ideology.

It will be saved by

A simple human

Who sees God within everyone.
