Kazuyo Sejima: The Woman Who Made Walls Breathe

Imad follows Kazuyo Sejima through seven buildings and finds in each one a wall made lighter so a person can appear behind it.

Cover art for the Kazuyo Sejima epic: a portrait of the architect in glasses before white, curving glass pavilions and stacked white boxes among trees

Kazuyo Sejima is a Japanese architect who founded SANAA with Ryue Nishizawa in 1995; the two shared the Pritzker Prize in 2010. Imad's epic on Kazuyo Sejima, in Arabic and English, visits seven buildings, among them the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, the Rolex Learning Center in Lausanne and the Sumida Hokusai Museum in Tokyo, and reads her architecture as hospitality for light, footsteps and other people.

Note: This is a literary interpretation of real projects; its metaphors are not quotations from the architect. Most projects discussed are collaborative works by SANAA, founded by Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa in 1995; they jointly received the Pritzker Prize in 2010. The Sumida Hokusai Museum was designed by Sejima and her practice.

Introduction

Cities burdened the earth with stone shoulders.

People grew smaller beneath triumphant buildings.

Then came a woman carrying a white eraser.

She erased a little; someone appeared beyond the wall.

She lightened the roof; the sky recovered its breath.

She opened space; a passerby found room for his heart.

This is how Sejima’s quiet world begins.

Every line asks about the life crossing it.

Every space awaits a presence to give it meaning.

Kanazawa: The Circle That Widened Encounter

At Kanazawa’s 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, SANAA designed a transparent circular building with entrances from several directions, bringing the museum into the city’s everyday life.

Architecture curved, as though widening a gathering circle.

A child approached the glass without fear.

Trees appeared in its reflection like visitors.

Strangers’ footsteps met beneath a shared roof.

Arrival became a small beginning of belonging.

Inside, paintings awaited eyes they had never expected.

As though art had placed its chair beside the street.

Toledo: The Glass That Carried the Garden

At the Toledo Museum of Art’s Glass Pavilion, glass walls allow views of interior and exterior to overlap.

Here the wall stands near disappearance.

The garden passes through, leaving its color inside.

Branches overlap with faces and displayed objects.

Looking becomes a journey through quiet layers.

As though the place remembers once being air.

Yet the glass carries fragility with precise strength.

Here, lightness is the fruit of patient work.

Essen: The Windows That Scattered the Square

SANAA completed the Zollverein School of Management and Design in Essen in 2006, a notable project in their shared career.

In the cube shown, the windows vary.

As though light scattered letters across concrete.

A small window keeps a corner’s secret.

A wider one invites a tree inside.

The mass seems still; eyes move within it.

Each opening holds its own measure of the world.

The square gains the rhythm of sleeping breath.

New York: The Boxes That Shifted the Sky

SANAA’s New Museum building opened on the Bowery in 2007; its vertical design responded to the constrained site and the street’s vitality.

In New York, boxes rose above the noise.

They shifted slightly; possibility appeared between their edges.

As though a hand had stacked dreams.

And left each dream room toward the sky.

Below, the city continues in restless ways.

Above, silence expands around a work of art.

Both worlds meet within one shifting body.

Lausanne: The Ground That Became a Library

At EPFL’s Rolex Learning Center, the interior takes the form of an undulating landscape, rising and falling to create different environments within one building.

Here the ground rose beneath knowledge’s feet.

Reading became a journey across a white wave.

An idea settles beside a quiet slope.

Another travels toward an open courtyard’s light.

People drift apart, then space gathers them.

As though the library learned the landscape’s shape.

And thought learned to walk before settling.

Grace Farms: The Roof That Followed the Land

At Grace Farms in Connecticut, SANAA designed the River building, whose continuous roof follows the terrain and connects several spaces.

The roof stretched like a river carrying shade.

It curved beside trees, then continued onward.

Beneath it, life moves between gathering and reflection.

Above it, seasons change without pausing.

A walker can hear the distance between footsteps.

Silence finds a roof preserving its breadth.

As though the building slowed time for attention.

Sumida Hokusai: The Silver That Sheltered the Wave

At Tokyo’s Sumida Hokusai Museum, Sejima used gently reflective aluminum façades and slits connecting the building with surrounding paths and views.

The building resembles silver opening its secrets.

The city enters its surface, then changes.

A window approaches; a passing tree’s shadow recedes.

Inside, the walls shelter Hokusai’s traces.

The painted wave sleeps behind the shining envelope.

A slit becomes a meeting between two times.

A city moves onward; an image keeps reaching us.

Conclusion

After this journey, the wall’s weight changes.

We see it through the life it permits.

Through a seat offering someone a little peace.

Through a window returning the street’s evening face.

Through a door making arrival less lonely.

In this reading, Sejima’s philosophy becomes hospitality.

Hospitality for light, footsteps, and others around us.

The building’s weight recedes; its occupants’ lives expand.

When visitors leave, they carry a little spaciousness.

As though a window finally opened within the heart
