The Grand Tribunal of Duha

Three hundred and sixty joints file their claims at dawn, and two small rak'ahs answer them all.

Morning light falling on a prayer mat, the image behind this Duha prayer poem

This Duha prayer poem stages a morning tribunal in which the body summons the soul: three hundred and sixty joints stand as witnesses, the heart sits as judge and the mind as a nervous lawyer. The knee, the eye, the lungs and the arteries each ask who gave them their gifts, and the answer arrives in two rak'ahs of Duha, the soul's receipt for daily blessings.

In A Morning Unlike Any Other Morning,

I Awoke To Find My Body Summoning Me.

It Was Not Illness.

Nor Was It A Dream.

It Was A Formal Summons From Heaven.

Three Hundred And Sixty Joints,

Three Hundred And Sixty Witnesses,

And Three Hundred And Sixty Open Cases.

The Heart Stood As Judge.

The Mind Stood As A Nervous Lawyer.

As For The Soul,

It Was The Only Defendant.

The Knee Asked:

Who Granted You The Power To Stand?

The Eye Asked:

Who Lit The Light In My Pupils?

The Lungs Asked:

Who Sent Air Without A Bill?

The Arteries Asked:

Who Taught The Blood Its Path?

And The Answer Was Missing.

Then The Files Of Gratitude Rose.

Until They Covered The Horizon.

I Saw Angels Carrying The Ledgers Of Life.

And Days Walking On Crutches Of Light.

And Years Falling From Our Pockets.

Like Coins Falling From A Poor Man's Coat.

Then A Voice Unseen Proclaimed:

How Will This Human Repay His Debt?

How Will He Pay For Sight?

For Hearing?

For Walking?

For A Heart That Beat Through The Night?

The Entire Universe Fell Silent.

Even The Stars Held Their Breath.

Then The Answer Came From Duha.

Not From Earth's Treasuries.

Nor From The Banks Of Kings.

But From Two Rak‘ahs.

Only Two Rak‘ahs.

Two Rak‘ahs Defeating Three Hundred Sixty Debts.

Two Rak‘ahs Feeding Hungry Joints.

Two Rak‘ahs Repairing Cracks In The Soul.

Two Rak‘ahs That Make Angels Smile.

Two Rak‘ahs People Think Are Small.

While Heaven Sees Them As A Galaxy.

There I Finally Understood.

Man Does Not Live By Bread Alone.

But By Gratitude.

And The Greatest Poverty In The World.

Is Not Losing Wealth.

But Losing Wonder.

And That Two Rak‘ahs Of Duha,

Are Not An Extra Prayer.

They Are The Soul's Signature

On The Receipt Of Daily Blessings.

O Allah, Make Us Among Those Who Know The Worth Of Light Before Sunset,

And Who Repay The Debts Of Blessings With Gratitude Before Departure.
