Between Walls That Watch and Roofs That Choke the Sky

When architecture turned from sheltering people to guarding power, the home itself became the target.

An empty house with watching walls and a closed window, an image of domicide and the architecture of memory

This prose poem on domicide and the architecture of memory starts with the home, older than the state and the palace, the room where civilization began. It then follows the moment architecture stopped protecting people and started guarding power, when walls watched and windows had to close. Imad ends with memory as the one house that no bulldozer can bring down.

In the beginning, there was the home.

Not the state,

Nor the palace,

Nor the barracks,

Nor borders drawn with ink and blood.

There was the home.

A small room,

A window welcoming the morning,

The smell of bread drifting from the kitchen,

And a mother’s voice

Reordering the world every evening.

From the home, civilization began.

From the inner courtyard

Stories were born,

Children learned the names of stars,

And walls preserved the secrets of lovers,

The departed,

And those returning after long absence.

But something happened.

Somewhere,

Architecture stopped protecting people,

And began protecting power.

Walls were no longer built

To resist the wind,

But to direct the gaze.

Windows were no longer opened

To welcome sunlight,

But to determine what may be seen

And what must remain unseen.

Buildings grew taller,

While souls grew smaller.

The towers rose,

While the distance between people and fear diminished.

Concrete became a new language.

A language that writes no poems,

Only reports.

It preserves no memories,

Only records.

In many cities,

The home was never merely a structure.

It was an extension of the body.

The alleys were its arteries,

The squares its heart,

And neighbors its memory.

Then came an age

When the home itself became suspect.

The wall became a witness that must be silenced.

The window became an eye that must be shut.

The balcony became a voice that must be removed.

And thus,

It was not only people who were killed.

The home was killed as well.

The corridor where we learned to walk was killed.

The door that waited for our return.

The tree that grew beside us.

And the window that knew our names.

This is architectural killing.

When a place is erased

So memory may be erased.

When a home is demolished

So the road back to oneself is lost.

Yet homes are more stubborn than maps.

Stronger than bulldozers.

Longer-lived than regimes.

For the true home

Does not stand only upon land.

It resides within the soul.

That is why we still remember.

We remember the scent of jasmine.

The sound of rain on old roofs.

A father’s footsteps returning at dusk.

A mother’s hand opening the window to dawn.

We remember because memory

Is the last house no one can demolish.

And that is why we write.

We write because words

Sometimes become homes.

And because poems

Can become temporary homelands.

And because when stone falls,

Meaning remains standing.

And the home remains

Somewhere within the heart,

Waiting for its people to return.

As Damascus awaits an old rain,

And as windows await

The light that still knows the way.
