The Epic of Modernism
From Villa Savoye to the Seagram Building, an architect retells how modernism tried to make buildings honest.
By Architect Imad DarouichUpdated 7 min read

This prose epic walks through the principles of modernist architecture as they took shape in the early twentieth century: form and function, honest materials, simple forms, a social mission and the beauty of less. Imad illustrates each with a building, from Villa Savoye and the Weissenhof Estate to the Seagram Building and the Unité d'Habitation in Marseille, and ends with the questions modernism left behind.
At the dawn of the twentieth century…
The world was changing at extraordinary speed.
The Industrial Revolution transformed the cities.
Trains cut across the land.
Skyscrapers climbed toward the sky.
And people searched for a new language of building.
From this transformation, Modernism emerged.
It was not merely a style.
It was the spirit of an entire age.
It wanted to declare:
Enough of building ornamented palaces.
Enough of deceiving the eye with empty decoration.
Let us return to honesty.
To simplicity.
To function.
FIRST PRINCIPLE: FORM AND FUNCTION
Lines are not merely decoration.
They must serve the human being.
A window opens to welcome sunlight.
Not to hide behind a heavy frame.
A chair exists to provide comfort.
Not to become a throne.
The spirit of the age was clear:
Form follows function.
Yet the phrase preceded European Modernism.
It was coined by American architect Louis Sullivan.
It later became central to modern architectural thought.
1929–1931.Villa Savoye, 1929–1931.
It was designed by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret.
A white house that seems to float.
Raised upon slender pilotis.
Light moves freely through its spaces.
Space is liberated from the weight of the traditional wall.
Le Corbusier famously envisioned the house as:
A machine for living in.
Yet a machine seeking light, order, and beauty.
SECOND PRINCIPLE: HONESTY OF MATERIALS
Steel, glass, and concrete…
Were no longer materials to be concealed.
Why cover steel to make it resemble stone?
Why hide concrete behind a mask?
Material can speak in its own name.
Beauty can reside in its truth.
1958.The Seagram Building, 1958.
In the heart of New York.
Designed by Mies van der Rohe with Philip Johnson.
A tower of glass and metal.
It became an icon of American Modernism.
Disciplined in its geometry.
Quiet in its presence.
Elegant as a short poem.
It did not need to shout.
Order was its language.
Proportion was its music.
THIRD PRINCIPLE: SIMPLICITY OF FORM
The square is balance.
Because it defines its boundaries with clarity.
The rectangle is order.
Because it organizes space and movement.
The straight line is honesty.
Because it moves toward its purpose without disguise.
The circle is unity.
Because it always returns to itself.
Yet Modernism did not worship form for its own sake.
It searched for an order behind form.
And for logic behind beauty.
1927.The Weissenhof Estate, Stuttgart, 1927.
It was a living exhibition of modern housing.
Its overall planning was led by Mies van der Rohe.
Leading Modernist architects contributed to it.
Among them were Le Corbusier, Gropius, Scharoun, and others.
It was not merely a collection of houses.
It was a laboratory for the future of living.
FOURTH PRINCIPLE: THE SOCIAL MISSION
Modernism was not intended only for the elite.
At its heart was a powerful social dream.
Healthy housing.
Light-filled schools.
More humane hospitals.
Cities capable of serving millions.
Architecture is not a closed palace.
Architecture is everyday life.
1952.Unité d’Habitation in Marseille, 1952.
Designed by Le Corbusier.
A monumental block raised above the ground.
Yet within it lived the idea of a city.
Apartments.
Services.
Shops.
Communal facilities.
And a rooftop for recreation and communal life.
The question was larger than the building.
How can architecture help create a community?
FIFTH PRINCIPLE: THE BEAUTY OF SIMPLICITY
Mies van der Rohe declared:
Less is more.
It was not a call for visual poverty.
It was a call for discipline.
To remove what is unnecessary.
So that the essential may appear.
To let ornament fall silent.
So that space may speak.
To reduce the elements.
So that their power may increase.
Simplicity is not absence.
It is concentration.
It is not emptiness.
It is clarity.
THE ARCHITECTS WHO SHAPED MODERNISM
Louis Sullivan gave function a voice.
Walter Gropius reunited art and craft.
Le Corbusier reimagined the house and the city.
Mies van der Rohe transformed simplicity into elegance.
Frank Lloyd Wright searched for modernity within nature.
They did not agree on everything.
But they shared a rejection of blind imitation.
They wanted an architecture belonging to their own age.
FROM PARIS TO NEW YORK
And thus Modernism became a global revolution.
It crossed borders.
It crossed languages.
From Paris to New York.
From Berlin to Chicago.
From Europe to the Americas, Asia, and beyond.
The house changed.
The office changed.
The factory changed.
The city itself changed.
Villa Savoye became a white manifesto.
Seagram became a vertical poem.
The Marseille Unité became a social experiment.
Weissenhof became a laboratory of modern housing.
WHEN THE REVOLUTION BECAME A QUESTION
Yet every revolution carries within it a counter-question.
Did simplicity sometimes become coldness?
Did a universal language become global sameness?
Did some architects forget place, history, and memory?
Did glass itself become a new kind of mask?
From these questions,
New responses would later emerge.
Postmodernism would arrive.
Symbol would return.
Color would return.
Memory would return to the façade.
Architecture never remains still for long.
Every architectural answer,
Carries the next question within it.
CONCLUSION
Modernism was more than glass façades.
More than straight lines.
More than concrete and steel.
It was an attempt to redefine life itself.
It declared that architecture is not ornament upon a wall.
It is a home for humanity.
A stage for light.
An order for movement.
A space for freedom.
Today…
We still see its imprint upon our cities.
In every glass tower.
In every open plan.
In every building searching for clarity.
Yet Modernism’s greatest legacy
Was not a form.
It was a question.
Can a building be honest?
Can beauty live without masks?
And can less truly contain more?
