The Epic of the Verse: What Has Deceived You
Imad hears in the verse a question that is less a rebuke than mercy: a last call to return before the dust.

Imad wrote this prose poem on the verse that asks the human being what has deceived you concerning your Generous Lord (82:6). He follows a person who builds cities and gathers wealth as if he will never die, down to the grave where every title falls away, and reads the question as mercy in the form of a rebuke, a last call to return before sunset.
O human being...
Where do you go while carrying your shadow toward the sunset?
You build cities as if you will remain forever.
You gather wealth as if death does not know your address.
You plant your dreams upon the sands of time.
Then the verse arrives like lightning in a silent night:
O mankind, what has deceived you concerning your Generous Lord?"
What concealed your fragility from you?
Who convinced you that life belongs to your hands?
How did you forget that your heart beats by a permission not your own?
And that the breath leaving you now
May never return again?
You flee from illness to the physician.
You flee from anxiety to entertainment.
You flee from loneliness to noise.
Yet no one escapes the truth.
For truth does not run after man.
It walks beside him from birth.
Until it reaches the gate of the grave.
There...
Where all titles fall away.
No president and no minister.
No rich and no poor.
No victor and no defeated.
Only a human being.
And an open book.
And deeds that do not know how to lie.
In the Barzakh
The walls become silent.
But the truths begin to speak.
And the years become mirrors.
In which a person sees himself exactly as he is.
Without adornment.
Without excuses.
Without masks.
O human being...
What deceived you concerning your Generous Lord?
The One who gave before you asked.
Who concealed your faults before you repented.
Who granted you time before you returned.
And opened the gates of mercy
Every time you closed them with your own hands.
The question is not merely a rebuke.
It is mercy disguised as a question.
A final call before sunset.
A final lamp before darkness.
And a Generous Voice saying:
Return to Me...
Before you return to the dust.
Blessed is the one who heard the question
Before hearing the answer.
Blessed is the one who realized
That all the roads of earth
End at a single gate.
The Gate of the Generous One.
Glorious and Exalted is He.
