The Trial of the Last Orchard
In a court run by the haste of the age, an old fig leaf is tried for staying green, and an architect takes the side of the orchard.

Imad wrote this poem about trees and concrete after reading about Hisham's Orchard. In his court the judge is the haste of the age, concrete walks in with a certificate of innocence, and an old fig leaf stands accused of existing before the maps, while the architect sides with the orchard and warns that a city which loses its trees loses its memory with them.
I read about Hisham's Orchard.
Yet I felt the orchard was reading me.
I entered it.
I found no trees.
I found silent witnesses.
Every tree carried a testimony.
Every branch refused to testify.
I asked the road, "Where is the orchard?"
It answered, "It is still here."
But people abandoned its language.
I saw concrete walking with confidence.
It carried a certificate of innocence.
As for the trees...
They were on trial for remaining green.
Inside that courtroom...
The judge was not a man.
It was the haste of the age.
And the accused...
An old fig leaf.
Its crime was existing before the maps.
They told it, "Step aside."
The city must grow."
It replied:
Do cities truly grow when their hearts grow smaller?
I am an architect.
I know stone is a language.
Yet I have learned...
That trees teach stone how to speak.
Every city that destroys its orchards...
Builds a cemetery without knowing it will live inside it.
The problem is not construction.
It is forgetfulness.
Forgetfulness is the greatest bulldozer history has ever built.
We do not protect the orchard.
The orchard is the one protecting us.
When the last tree falls...
Not only the shade will disappear.
Memory will fall with it.
One day children will search...
For the meaning of the word "orchard."
They will find it in an old dictionary.
Not outside their own windows.
If a miracle is still possible today...
Let it be the planting of a tree.
Before raising another tower.
A tower may touch the sky.
But a tree...
Invites heaven to descend upon the earth.
