When the Table Outgrew the Visit: A Poem About Hospitality

When the table must be perfect before a friend may come, the visit waits; a story of tea, longing and a door opened as it is.

Cover for a poem about hospitality: two old men talk over tea at a small carved table between open wooden doors, a long empty dining table floating above a city of domes behind them.

When the Table Outgrew the Visit is a poem about hospitality by Imad Darouich, in Arabic and English. Imad calls an old friend to say he will drop by and hears the friend's joy turn into worry that the house is not ready. The story moves from childhood homes entered without appointments to a host too busy cooking to sit down, and to a lonely man who finally invites a friend over for tea.

A Note

This is a story of love burdened.

And generosity forgetting its first purpose.

Hospitality is beautiful when it opens doors.

It exhausts us when entry becomes conditional.

The Epic

One evening, I missed an old friend.

I called and said: I’ll stop by.

I heard his joy cross the wires.

Then I heard something fall within his voice.

He said: Wait, the house isn’t ready.

I looked around; longing was completely ready.

I said: A chair beside you is enough.

But he had entered hospitality’s courtroom.

There, plates stood like white judges.

The spoons demanded the number of dishes.

The curtains required proof of household order.

Meanwhile, love waited outside the interrogation room.

It carried our photograph from childhood.

When we entered homes without appointments.

A mother lifted her teapot; stories began.

She never asked what the tea lacked.

She asked us: What kept you so long?

We sat; the small room accommodated everyone.

We shared bread whose simplicity embarrassed nobody.

Laughter supplied whatever the table lacked.

Time forgot its coat beside the door.

Then we grew, and so did visiting requirements.

We added dish after dish to the table.

Until our friend’s face disappeared behind dishes.

We postponed the visit again and again.

Until longing grew old awaiting its turn.

In the kitchen, a woman chased time.

She wanted everything to come out perfect.

In the sitting room, her guest awaited her.

He came to ask how she was.

But her exhaustion was preparing his food.

He called: Come, I haven’t seen you in months.

She said: One minute, the refreshments aren’t ready.

The minutes carried their meeting toward its end.

When she sat down, he had to leave.

He looked at the table, then at her.

He said: I ate plenty, yet missed you more.

That sentence remained standing after he left.

The plates couldn’t carry it into the kitchen.

The broom couldn’t sweep it from the house.

Across the neighborhood lived a lonely man.

He bought fruit, then postponed inviting anyone.

He lacked dessert; one wall needed paint.

He lacked money to properly receive loved ones.

He had stories enough for many evenings.

But his door stayed closed upon those stories.

Until, one cold night, he imagined

His chair asking where his friends had gone.

He found no answer for the old wood.

He opened his phone and wrote a message.

Come, I have tea and much to tell.

He sent it before hesitation could return.

Soon came the knock he knew.

He opened the door; his friend carried longing.

He entered without inspecting the worn wall.

He didn’t search for sweets beside the cups.

He embraced him and said: Finally, I see you.

They sat; the water slowly began boiling.

One told what he had long concealed.

The other reached across the little table.

The tea cooled; neither of them noticed.

Something in that room needed their warmth.

Closing

Since that evening, I eased my door’s requirements.

I prepare what I can, then join them.

I let the house keep some familiar disorder.

I give the visit the time it deserves.

When abundance comes, the table gladly expands.

When means are limited, we gather around tea.

I don’t postpone a beloved face for perfection.

Some absent friends never return when we’re ready.

Come as you are; I’ll open the door.

I have room for you and unfinished conversation.

Sit close; this absence has lasted too long.

Cafés of Shadow follows a Damascene café and its regulars across the years, and The Epic of Preserving the Blessing honors bread and water in Damascene homes. Imad's coffee shop love poem keeps the conversation going.
