The Coffee That Knows More Than We Say: A Coffee Shop Love Poem
A woman steps into a café out of the cold, the man behind the counter reads her silence, and for a few minutes a busy city stops.

This coffee shop love poem follows one encounter from start to finish. A tired woman comes in out of the cold, the man behind the counter notices more than her order, and the two end up sharing a table and a conversation made of half sentences. Imad leaves it unnamed and unresolved: she walks back into the cold, and the café is no longer the same.
She entered escaping the cold
But the cold was not only outside
It lived between words
Between broken breaths
The café was overly warm
As if trying to convince those inside
That the world is still fine
She ordered with a tired voice
The fatigue was not only physical
But the fatigue of an untold story
The barista observed details
Not out of curiosity
But like one who reads silence
He noticed how she stood
How she held her bag
As if holding something heavier
He did not intervene
Yet he was not absent
Present in an unseen way
When he handed her the cup
His fingers touched hers briefly
A brief moment yet clear
She smiled softly in thanks
A light smile
As if apologizing for something
He noticed her trembling hands
A tremble not caused by cold
But something deeper
He asked if she was okay
The question was not casual
But an attempt to open a door
She laughed saying she was fine
But the laugh was not steady
Her voice broke before finishing
They sat without agreement
As if the chair chose for them
A shared place
Minutes passed unplanned
But the silence was structured
Not empty
But filled with waiting
Conversation began very slowly
As if words feared leaving
Each sentence was a risk
Confessions were not direct
But signals
Half a sentence
And half silence
She said things she did not finish
He said things he did not explain
Yet the meaning was clear
The café slowly disappeared
No more sounds
Nor people
Only a table
Two cups
And an unwritten conversation
It was not fast love
Nor a cinematic moment
But an unannounced beginning
A beginning like first breath
Quiet yet real
As if the city allowed them
A moment outside its rules
In a city that never stops
Time paused briefly
When she stood to leave
She said nothing more
But her final look
Was longer than all conversation
She stepped back into the cold
But she was not the same
He remained in place
But the café had changed
From that moment
Coffee was no longer just coffee
It became memory
And became waiting
Waiting for a moment
That may never return
And so it was not coincidence
But possibility
That passed then vanished

More moments like this one fill Short Love Stories and Syrian Love Stories in New York, where a café on the edge of memory also appears; both are in the human story collection.
