When Dawn Needed Two Witnesses: Monet and Turner

The sun waits behind a New York bridge until its paperwork is in order, so an architect calls two painters of light as witnesses.

Imad's cover for his piece on Monet and Turner: portraits of the two painters above a sunrise over the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan, with a barrier and guard booth on the walkway and an open sketchbook in front

Claude Monet (1840 to 1926), a founder of Impressionism, painted series of the same subjects to record changing light and weather, and in London in 1870 he admired how J. M. W. Turner (1775 to 1851) painted light. Imad's imagined fable calls Monet and Turner as witnesses when an official on a New York bridge will not let the day begin until the sunrise matches an approved picture.

A Note

An imagined story bringing together Claude Monet and William Turner; the encounter, dialogue, and events are fictional.

The Introduction

At six in the morning, the sun stopped behind a bridge in New York.

Half of it remained visible.

An hour passed.

The river stayed cold, and the windows kept waiting.

On the bridge, an official stood before a barrier.

I asked: Why is daylight late?

He said: The new dawn does not resemble the approved photograph.

The Epic

He showed me an old photograph.

A clear sky. A complete sun. Light in a designated place.

I looked toward the horizon.

The mist was moving, and clouds concealed the sun’s edge.

I said: Morning changes.

He said: That is why we require two witnesses.

I found Monet at the river’s edge.

Before him stood paintings of the same scene.

In one, the water was silver.

In another, violet.

In the third, a drop of light was enough to change the entire river.

I said: Come. They want proof of dawn.

He took two paintings.

The official looked at them.

He said: Your testimony is contradictory.

Monet replied: Time passed between them.

He stamped both sheets.

The witness is inconsistent.”

At the other end of the bridge, Turner appeared carrying a painting from which a storm almost spilled.

Light cut through the clouds above the turbulent sea.

He placed it before the official.

He said: Light may arrive like this.

The official stepped back.

He said: This weather is unsuitable for an opening.

I asked: The opening of what?

He said: The day.

Behind us, people began to gather.

A worker afraid of being late.

A woman wanting to open her shop.

A child carrying a notebook, asking why morning had stayed in place.

The official asked them to wait.

Then he entered his booth and switched on a lamp.

The Turning

I am an architect. I looked at the bridge.

The barrier stood across the pedestrian path.

Yet the sun was waiting above the river.

I approached the water.

There I saw it again.

A reflection trembling whenever a wave passed.

Monet said: Look closely.

Turner knelt and put his hand into the water.

He lifted it.

Light ran between his fingers.

The child stepped forward with his notebook.

He drew a yellow line.

Then he held the page up to the booth’s window.

The official came out.

He said: Who gave you permission?

The child pointed to the river.

The sun had begun to rise.

The official shouted: The file is incomplete!

But the light reached his face.

He had to raise his hand to shield his eyes.

The Ending

The people crossed the bridge.

The worker took out his phone and told them he was on his way.

The woman took out her shop key.

And the child finished his yellow line.

Monet kept painting the water that had changed.

Turner painted the last cloud crossing the sun.

O Lord, help us welcome life when it arrives with features we did not expect.

Before I left, the official asked for my signature.

I asked: On what?

He said: The record confirming that daylight occurred.

I signed my name.

In the witnesses’ field, I wrote:

Everyone who opened a window this morning.”

Another office tries to abolish a color in The City That Deleted Blue, and learning to live in New York is the subject of The Epic of New York: Learning to Stand Inside Another City. More painters fill the literature and art collection.
