When Concrete Bloomed in the Sky: Jean Nouvel and Claude Monet

Jean Nouvel's dome scatters the sun and Monet's pond holds the sky, and an architect learns to measure light by the person sitting beneath it.

Cover for a poem on the Louvre Abu Dhabi dome: Jean Nouvel and Claude Monet above a perforated dome shedding light on white galleries and a pond of water lilies

The Louvre Abu Dhabi, designed by Jean Nouvel and opened on Saadiyat Island in November 2017, stands under a web-patterned dome that lets sunlight filter through in scattered patches. Imad's prose poem stands beneath the Louvre Abu Dhabi dome, then beside Claude Monet's water lilies, a series of about 250 paintings of his garden at Giverny, and asks how an architect can give changing light a place to live.

A literary vision inspired by Jean Nouvel’s architecture and Claude Monet’s painting; its imagery and interpretations belong to the writer and are not quotations attributed to them.

The Introduction

I am Imad Darouich.

I draw an opening in a roof.

Its area is small upon the page.

Yet the sun will enter through it and cross an entire room.

That is why I lift my eyes from the measurement.

What I draw in millimeters, a person will live through in hours.

The Epic

With Nouvel, the façade becomes a layer negotiating daylight.

It filters light.

It deepens shade.

And leaves the interior its share of the sky.

I contemplate the light beneath the dome of Louvre Abu Dhabi.

It descends through its layers, scattered across the ground.

A patch upon stone.

Another upon a shoulder.

Daylight moves, and the place’s map moves with it.

I see the roof painting without holding a brush.

Then Monet comes to water.

He places one color beside another.

The strokes appear separate when I draw close.

When I step back, the light comes together.

I see water lilies and feel that the surface is deeper than its boundaries.

The sky is above the pond.

And the sky is within it.

Between them, a green leaf holds its place.

I think of a building reflected upon water.

Everything I calculated as fixed can be reshaped by a small ripple.

Here Nouvel and Monet meet within my gaze.

Layers giving light a form.

And strokes of color giving that form the lifespan of a moment.

I want that moment to enter what I build.

For a visitor to know the difference between morning and evening.

To see a shadow shift and feel time passing.

And to find, beneath the immense roof, a place where the body feels at ease.

For beautiful light needs a compassionate calculation.

An eye reading.

An eye that tires quickly.

And a face wanting a little shade.

These differences enter the design with me.

I test the opening.

I review the surface’s reflection.

And measure glare where a person will sit.

Then I give the water a safe edge.

And the tree enough ground for its roots.

I want a beauty that can stay.

A hand waters it.

Another hand maintains it.

And it grows deeper as life passes through it.

The Ending

O Lord, help us know how much light life needs.

Through Nouvel, I contemplate a roof transforming sunlight into an experience of place.

Through Monet, I contemplate an eye finding the world renewed by changing light.

Then I return to the small opening in my plan.

I draw a stone beneath it.

And water beside it.

Daylight will pass.

A golden patch will appear upon the surface.

A passerby may think the wall has bloomed.

And I will know how much care that flower needed to reach them.

Nouvel's wider career is in Jean Nouvel: The Architect Who Refused to Have One Style, his tower in New York is read window by window in 100 Eleventh Avenue: When the Façade Became a Second Sky, and more buildings are in the buildings and cities collection.
