When the River Raised a Garden and Humanity Reclaimed the Sky: Little Island

An architect who knows how loads go down into foundations watches a garden lifted above the Hudson.

Cover art for the Little Island NYC poem: a planted park raised on white concrete tulip columns above the Hudson at sunset, with the Lower Manhattan skyline behind

Little Island is a public park on Pier 55 in Hudson River Park, off Manhattan's West Side, designed by Heatherwick Studio with the landscape architect Signe Nielsen, carried on 132 concrete 'tulips' and opened on May 21, 2021. Imad's Little Island NYC poem, in Arabic and English, moves from the history of the old piers to the engineering, the planting and the stages, and ends with what the garden carries for a tired passer-by.

I am an architect.

I know how a load descends into foundations.

But here, I saw foundations lift a dream.

On Manhattan’s West Side.

Above the Hudson.

Stone stood in the water.

And opened its crown to the trees.

Its name is Little Island.

The small island.

Small on the map.

Vast in its capacity for wonder.

55.At Pier 55.

Between 13th and 14th Streets.

Within Hudson River Park.

There, the city found room to stretch its lungs.

On May 21, 2021, it opened to the public.

Approximately 2.4 acres.

Nearly nine thousand seven hundred square meters.

A space a child can cross.

And a dream that takes many engineers to carry.

Before the garden… the water had a memory.

These shores knew the Lenape people.

They knew their fishing, trade, and seasonal encampments.

Then came the ships.

And the pier became a doorway between two continents.

54.In 1912, Carpathia arrived at Pier 54.

Aboard were survivors of the Titanic.

People whom the sea had returned from the edge of the end.

In 1915, Lusitania departed from that same pier.

Five days later, it was sunk off Ireland.

The water kept moving.

And the names remained heavier than the ships.

The steel arch still stands at the southern entrance.

A remnant of the old Cunard–White Star building.

I see it as a rib that memory never withdrew from the place’s chest.

In later decades, the pier became a social and cultural gathering place.

And a refuge for New York’s LGBTQ community.

A space to meet, dance, and be visible without fear.

Hudson River Park.In 1998, it became part of Hudson River Park.

Then Hurricane Sandy came.

And the old pier was damaged.

In 2013, the initiative to revive it began.

Barry Diller, in partnership with the park’s leadership.

From the pier’s wound, the idea grew.

Nature, art, and a space for people.

Then imagination entered the engineering office.

Thomas Heatherwick’s studio shaped the design.

Signe Nielsen and MNLA shaped the landscape.

Arup provided engineering across several disciplines.

The Diller–von Furstenberg Family Foundation provided most of the funding.

Barry Diller and his wife, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg.

The project cost approximately 260 million dollars.

An immense figure.

And before that figure, I ask as an architect:

What will a person find upon arrival?

Shade?

A bench?

Or a chance to feel that the city has room for them?

One hundred and thirty-two concrete structures.

Their crowns widen like tulip cups.

They carry soil, pathways, and trees.

Their elevations vary.

And hills are born above the river.

The idea drew inspiration from the wooden piles of the old piers.

Those remnants rising from the water.

As though the past had extended its fingers.

And architecture placed a garden in its palm.

It appears to float.

But it is anchored on piles.

Some reach rock as much as two hundred feet below the water.

Approximately sixty-one meters.

Each concrete cup is roughly twenty feet in diameter.

About six meters.

This is the secret behind the lightness I see.

Depth working in darkness.

So a person can walk in the light.

The concrete components were fabricated in upstate New York.

Separate petals.

Assembled into complete cups.

Then barges carried them down the Hudson.

A floating crane lifted them.

And placed them onto the piles.

In that journey, I saw seeds made of concrete.

Traveling over water.

To grow into land.

Behind this scene, digital modeling was at work.

And calculations for fabrication and assembly.

The “Cairo pentagon” tiling pattern was used.

To give the composition its variety.

While allowing some fabrication elements to repeat.

Even wonder needed a system.

Even a dream needed a sound connection.

Then came the roots.

One hundred and fourteen trees were planted in the park.

And more than sixty-six thousand flowering bulbs.

The landscape designers describe roughly four hundred plant species and varieties.

Thirty-five species of trees.

Sixty-five species of shrubs.

And two hundred and ninety varieties of grasses, vines, perennials, and bulbs.

Each corner has its sunlight.

Its wind.

Its own microclimate.

So the landscape changes with the seasons.

Spring passes here in bloom.

And autumn passes like a painter changing colors.

Old wooden piles were retained in the water.

To remain habitats for aquatic life.

The elevated form also allows light to reach beneath the park.

Elements that absorb stormwater were integrated into the gardens and plazas.

As though the land we made above the river,

Is learning how to listen to it.

Then came sound.

The Amph”: an open-air amphitheater with approximately seven hundred seats.

And “The Glade”: a smaller performance space with approximately two hundred seats.

Music.

Dance.

Theater and opera.

Art opening a window in the city’s air.

Seats waiting for people carrying their stories.

Here, sound can pass between the leaves.

And water can be the theater’s neighbor.

For those who wish to cross from the poem into the place:

Admission to the park is free.

Performances in the main amphitheater require paid tickets.

In October, according to the current official schedule,

It opens from six in the morning until eleven at night.

The park may close during severe weather.

A southern bridge near 13th Street.

A northern bridge near 14th Street.

A crossing from solid ground to a garden above water.

A nearby subway station is 14th Street–8th Avenue.

لخطوط A وC وE وL.Serving the A, C, E, and L trains.

The M11, M12, and M14D SBS buses stop at 14th Street and 10th Avenue.

The park has no dedicated parking.

17.Its website lists a nearby paid garage at 450 West 17th Street.

The pathways are wheelchair accessible.

Accessible restrooms are available.

And baby changing tables.

Drinking fountains and a bottle refill station.

Two wheelchairs are available to borrow from park staff.

Because a path’s beauty becomes complete when people can travel it.

Bicycles must remain outside the park at the designated racks.

Pets are not permitted.

Working service dogs assisting people with disabilities are welcome.

Audio tours explore the site’s history and landscape.

So you can hear what each step holds.

And I… return to my hands.

To the first line on the page.

How many lives can this line make room for?

How much weariness can a bench carry?

How much exile can a tree’s shade soothe?

Here, I see concrete carrying earth.

Earth carrying roots.

Roots carrying a tree.

The tree carrying shade.

And shade holding a weary person.

This is the chain of loads I want to draw.

From the rock below,

To peace in a passerby’s chest.

And when someone asks me: What are you building?

I lift my eyes toward this garden.

And say:

I am searching for ground where a person has room to live.

Even if I must lift it above the water.
