Herzog & de Meuron: In Focus is an exhibition at M+ in Hong Kong, opened on September 12, 2026, that marks the museum's fifth anniversary and a donation from the Swiss firm that designed its building; it traces projects in China from 2002 to 2021, among them Tai Kwun and the National Stadium in Beijing. Imad's prose poem on the Herzog & de Meuron M+ exhibition lets the building, memory and the city speak.

This story is based on the exhibition "Herzog & de Meuron: In Focus", which opened on September 12, 2026, at the M+ Museum in Hong Kong.
The exhibition reviews ten selected projects by the firm in China, curated by Ikko Yokoyama and Iris Ng, and covers works from 2002 to 2021, including Tai Kwun in Hong Kong and the National Stadium in Beijing.
2021.The exhibition marks the fifth anniversary of the M+ Museum, which was itself designed by the firm between 2012 and 2021.
The symbolic characters and dialogue presented here (the Building, Memory, the City) are an imaginative surreal literary treatment, and no direct words are attributed to the real individuals named.
On land once reclaimed from the sea, a building stood holding a museum within it.
It was not merely walls.
It was itself the first piece in its own collection.
It was designed by a firm that had spent its whole existence asking: what makes stone remember?
In China, since 2002, this firm had begun leaving fingerprints that never repeated themselves.
An old prison in Hong Kong became an arts center. Its history was not demolished. It was restored so it could breathe again. A stadium in Beijing took the form of a nest woven from interlocking steel. It was not a cage. It was a celebration of the chaos that creates order. The City, gazing upon these buildings scattered within it, seemed to say:كل واحد منكم يشبهني في زاوية مختلفة.Each one of you resembles a different corner of me. This one resembles my restored past. And this one resembles my ambition that knows no limits.
Twenty years passed. And in 2021, a new building was completed on the harbor's edge. Unlike those before it, it was not a building for a single project. It was a home for visual art, design, architecture, and moving image all at once. It was named M+. On its first day, it looked at itself and seemed to ask:هل أنا حاوية للذاكرة، أم أنا نفسي جزء منها؟Am I a vessel for memory, or am I myself a part of it? No one answered right away. For buildings, like people, need time to know themselves. Five years passed since it had stood on that patch of land reclaimed from the sea. And in 2026, the museum decided to open its own vaults upon itself.
Not only to display the works of others.
But to display the story of its own makers.
Ten architectural moments from twenty years gathered in a single hall.
The prison that became art.
The stadium that became a symbol.
And the museum itself, standing as both witness and exhibit at once.
Memory asked the building:
How does it feel to be the one telling the story, while being part of it yourself?
The building did not answer in words.
It answered with the light that entered through its openings that day.
And with the visitors who stood before old images of buildings they once knew, or had never known at all.
This is the power of architecture when it turns to look back at itself.
To take twenty years of stone, steel, and glass.
And never pretend they are merely finished buildings.
To make every wall a question about time.
And every museum a mirror reflecting its own makers.
And a fifth anniversary a moment that celebrates not only the past, but questions the future not yet built.
Another museum building tells its own story in The Museum That Opened a Door in a Cloud, and The Guggenheim Epic: When the Museum Became a Path Within the Human reads a museum as a journey. More are in the buildings and cities collection.
