The Epic of the Derani River
The Derani river once woke the Ghouta's apricots at dawn; Imad asks who dried it and hears the river's own answer.

Imad wrote this prose poem on the Derani river, which flowed out of the Barada and walked the orchards of the Ghouta like an old man who knew every tree by name. Then came maps and planners who lined it with stone and called it a project and a green corridor, and when people blamed the rain, the river answered that its course had been narrowed and cut off from the earth.
In the beginning…
The river was never just water…
It was memory walking…
And Al-Ghouta was a heart beating
within it…
Derani emerged from Barada like a quiet line from a sacred book…
He walked among orchards like an old sage who knew every tree by name…
He watered the vines… whispered to figs… and woke apricots at dawn…
He never asked: where am I going?
For rivers do not search for paths… they are the path…
But then…
Maps were born…
Those who measured water in meters arrived… and judged rivers like employees…
Let us organize it…
Let us control it…
Let us beautify it…
The river smiled…
A smile of one who knows the ending…
They uprooted him from his bed…
From his muddy memory…
From his ancient pact with roots…
They dressed him in stone…
And called it: a project…
They called it: development…
They called it: a green corridor…
But…
How can green exist without water?
How can a river exist without a voice?
How can beauty exist without life?
At the old mill…
The stone wept before the water…
At the narrow channel…
Nothing remained to quench thirst…
Al-Ghouta was watching…
Not crying… but remembering…
She remembered days when the river was a father…
Not a canal… not a file…
She remembered children running after water…
Then came the question…
Who dried the river?
They said: the rain…
They said: climate…
They said: fate…
But the river…
لم يشتكِ من السماء…never blamed the sky…
He whispered calmly:
I did not dry…
You narrowed my chest…
You redirected my path…
You severed my bond with the earth…
I was a river…
You turned me into an idea…
I was life…
You turned me into a project…
And here…
The city fell silent…
Because the truth was too heavy to speak…
Not every drought comes from the sky…
And no river dies alone…
There are rivers that die…
حين تتحول إلى مخططات…when they become plans…
إلى خطوط على الورق…to lines on paper…
إلى مشاريع بلا روح…to projects without soul…
And there are cities…
تموت معها…that die with them…
But…
Deep beneath the earth…
Derani still remembers…
He remembers his ancient path…
He remembers the names of trees…
He remembers how people drank life…
And perhaps…
لن يعود كمشروع…he will not return as a project…
But he will return…
كنهرٍ…as a river…
Finale
The tragedy is not that water dries…
بل أن يجفّ فهمنا له…but that our understanding of it dries…
Because a river…
إذا فقدناه في الطبيعة…if we lose it in nature…
يمكن أن يعود…it may return…
But if we lose it in our consciousness…
فلن يعود أبداً…it will never return…
