Imad wrote this epic for the calligrapher Obaida Banki, who wrote the Mushaf of Qatar by hand, after reading how he found one of his own works hanging for sale at the Doha International Book Fair. He had made it in 1999 and the Syrian Ministry of Culture had once acquired it; twenty-five years later he bought it back for a small price, to save it from the market.

The Epic Of Ink Refusing To Die

When The Artist Buys Back His Memory

A Painting Is Never Just A Frame… But A Small Homeland Escaping Oblivion

The Epic Of The Painting That Returned From Exile

As an architect,

I live daily among concrete, voids, and memory,

I paused for long moments

Before this passing story upon social media.

Yet it

Was never an ordinary story about a

lost painting,

It felt instead

Like an entire homeland

reclaiming its forgotten face.

And when I read

The words of master calligrapher

Obaida Banki,

I felt

As though the ink itself trembled within the lines.

So my deepest greetings

To this noble and great artist,

Who never merely wrote letters,

But built complete spiritual homelands through them.

Abu Omar

Was never an ordinary calligrapher writing with ink alone,

But a man

Who builds domes, mosques, and spiritual kingdoms through language.

When he writes

The alif transforms into a minaret trembling with light,

And ink transforms

Into a long prayer above silent paper skin.

That man

Who wrote the Mushaf of Qatar with faithful trembling hands,

Suddenly stood

Before an old painting resembling his

forgotten face.

Inside the Doha International Book Fair,

The painting hung like a refugee without memory,

Waiting silently

For someone from her past to recognize her.

And when he approached her,

She recognized him immediately

Like a mother recognizing her

son after long absence.

A painting

Written by his own hands in 1999,

And once acquired by the Syrian Ministry of Culture,

When the state still

Understood art was never decoration for walls.

In those distant years,

Artistic works

Were purchased as fragments of national memory,

Not as merchandise

Traveling among brokers and cold

forgetting hands.

They still understood

A painting is never wood, color

, and lines alone,

But a spiritual document

Witnessing an era of dreams and fractures.

He asked them quietly:

“Is this painting for sale?”

And the question

Resembled a man seeking his

mother’s grave in exile.

They answered: yes.

Then began the conversation about the painfully small price,

That number

Did not even honor the old ink box.

And there,

In that brief brutal moment,

Abu Omar discovered

That corruption never steals money alone,

It steals meaning, value, and

the dignity of things.

He bought his own painting again,

Not because he wished to own what was already his,

But because he feared for it

From final humiliation inside

cheap markets of forgetting.

He feared it might pass

From one ignorant hand into another broker’s grip,

And eventually transform

A nation’s memory into a soulless commodity.

Yet the most painful and miraculous moment,

Arrived when the confused seller realized,

That the man purchasing the painting today,

Was the same man

Who created it twenty-five years earlier with his hands.

هذاWhat age is this

That forces artists to buy back their own memory?

And what country is this

That sells its heritage for the price of

dust?

When heritage is sold,

We do not merely lose a framed painting,

We lose instead

Fragments of ourselves

preserving our names.

We lose the voices of

calligraphers, poets, and architects,

And we lose

The language that made the homeland less lonely.

For nations

Do not die only through wars and catastrophes,

They also perish

When memory is auctioned piece by piece.
