Scaffolding Around the Chest of Time: The Brooklyn Trust Company Building

An architect stands beneath a scaffolded bank in Brooklyn Heights, hears a worker's hammer overhead and rereads the word carved on its front.

Cover art for the Brooklyn Trust Company Building prose poem: an ornate stone bank wrapped in scaffolding, its arched doorways glowing gold and loose stones floating around it

The Brooklyn Trust Company Building at 177 Montague Street in Brooklyn Heights is a bank built from 1913 to 1916 in the Italian Renaissance style, designed by York & Sawyer after a palazzo in Verona; its facade and banking hall became a New York City landmark in 1996. Imad's imagined prose poem starts from a photograph of the Brooklyn Trust Company Building wrapped in scaffolding and turns a worker's repairs into a reflection on trust, stone and restoration.

A Note

An imagined epic drawn from the façade in the photograph, reflecting on stone, trust, and restoration without recounting the building’s documented history.

The Beginning

I saw the building standing inside its scaffolding.

Like an old man wearing extra bones to keep from bending.

Above his head, crowns of stone.

At his feet, a street that waits for no one.

I approached.

The doorway glowed behind the scaffolding.

As though someone, deep inside this body, was still awake.

The Epic

Across the façade, carved letters bore a name, and within that name, a word: Trust.

I stood beneath it.

I read it twice.

The first time, with my eyes.

The second, with everything I had lost.

I raised my head toward the columns.

They carried the floors in silence.

How many years can a column carry before it needs a shoulder?

The wind rose.

A piece of steel trembled.

Then I heard hammering overhead.

A worker was repairing a place I could not see.

Each blow reached the sidewalk like a heartbeat.

I imagined time stretched out upon the planks.

The worker was cleaning dust from its wound.

Time was still alive.

It lifted a finger whenever the hammer drew near.

It said: Gently, here.

A hand passed here that will never return.

A man leaned here on the day he could no longer stand.

A woman entered here, carrying her fear inside a handbag.

Do not smooth the wall before you hear them.

I reached for a scaffolding pole.

Cold, rough, close to the palm.

Above it, the crowns were distant.

Yet this temporary steel carried the path to their wounds.

I am an architect; for years, the finished façade captivated me.

The line that settles straight.

The stone that finds its place.

But here I saw beauty laid open to exhaustion.

I saw what standing requires.

A small bolt.

A steady plank.

And a worker’s eye watching before another foot takes a step.

The car before me moved.

The bottom of the doorway came into view.

For a moment, the light reached the sidewalk.

I walked beneath it.

Above me, a city suspended by bolts.

Around me, people going to work.

They did not look up.

They trusted that someone had tightened them well.

Then I understood the carved word.

Trust is a foot passing beneath a weight it cannot see.

And an unknown hand holding that weight for it.

The Ending

I walked away, the hammering still following me.

In my sketchbook, I drew the façade.

Then I drew the scaffolding.

And I kept the worker at the top of the page.

Small beside the building.

Clear against the sky.

The hammer was in his hand.

And beneath his hand, another century was trying to stand.
