Before I Speak: Surah Al-Hujurat, Verse 1

Before giving an answer or raising his voice, Imad stops at the first verse of Surah Al-Hujurat and asks where his opinion stands.

By Architect Imad Darouich3 min read

Imad's cover for a poem on Surah Al-Hujurat verse 1: carved doors open onto a white marble courtyard with a fountain, and a Qur'an rests on a wooden stand

Surah Al-Hujurat, the 49th chapter of the Qur'an, opens by telling the believers not to put themselves before Allah and His Messenger, and to be mindful of Allah, who hears and knows. Imad's prose poem, in Arabic and English, is a reflection on Surah Al-Hujurat verse 1: it gives the verse in full, then reads its three parts against his own habit of speaking first and defending a favored opinion.

A Note

This epic reflects on the first verse of Surah Al-Hujurat. It draws on its meaning and is not a substitute for Qur’anic commentary.

In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

﴿يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تُقَدِّمُوا۟ بَيْنَ يَدَىِ ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ ۖ وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ﴾ [الحجرات: ١]“O you who believe, do not put yourselves before Allah and His Messenger. And be mindful of Allah. Indeed, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.” [Al-Hujurat 49:1, translation of the meaning]

Allah addressed me as a believer.

I felt the weight of that word upon my shoulders.

Then came the command:

Do not put yourselves forward.”

Stop, Imad.

Before you give an answer, learn.

Before you object, listen.

Before you raise your opinion, see where Allah’s command stands.

How often have I built a pulpit for my opinion,

then asked the truth to climb up to it?

How often have I made what I love the measure,

and left what challenged me waiting at the door?

This verse tears down the pulpit.

And returns the measure to its place.

I must not put myself before Allah and His Messenger.

When Allah’s command is clear, I follow it.

When the Sunnah of His Messenger ﷺ is established, I do not place a favored opinion above it.

This is the reverence by which the heart is tested.

When the truth goes against what I wanted,

Will I follow it?

Or will I send it to another door so it cannot enter?

And be mindful of Allah.”

Mindfulness of Allah is not a garment I display before people.

It is what I do when the doors are shut.

To choose obedience when I am able to disobey.

To withdraw a word I loved because it was not true.

To walk by light from Allah.

Hoping for His mercy.

And fearing to go against His command.

Then the verse’s ending seems to open the walls of my chest:

Indeed, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.”

He hears what I have said.

And He knows why I said it.

He hears my voice when I raise the banner of truth.

And He knows whether I seek the truth,

أم أبحث عن نفسي خلف الراية.or seek myself behind the banner.

I cannot hide inside a beautiful phrase.

I cannot silence my intention by raising my voice.

So I stand at the first doorway of Surah Al-Hujurat.

I leave my pride outside.

And enter with whatever honesty I possess.

My Lord,

Teach me to step back when I must step back.

Teach me to follow Your Prophet ﷺ when his Sunnah becomes clear to me.

Do not let my tongue outrun my knowledge.

Nor my opinion run ahead of Your guidance.

At the opening of this verse, I am a servant learning.

At its end, I am a servant who knows that You hear and know.

Imad reads the opening chapter of the Qur'an in Guide Us to the Straight Path, and his book An Epic of Artistic Imagery in the Qur'an: Poems, Images, and Readings follows its images. More reflections are in the faith and spirit collection.
