The Night the Stars Refused to Remain Still: Van Gogh's The Starry Night

At his asylum window in Saint-Rémy, the sky begins to turn, and the moon puts Van Gogh on trial for painting it that way.

Imad's cover for the story of The Starry Night: Van Gogh looks up at a swirling blue and gold night sky with a crescent moon, a dark cypress and a small village, beside a white window frame

Vincent van Gogh painted The Starry Night in June 1889 at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, where he had admitted himself that May; the view came from his east-facing window, with an imagined village added. Imad tells the story of The Starry Night as a trial in which the moon, the stars, the cypress and the colors blue and yellow question the painter about the sky he set in motion.

This story is based on Vincent van Gogh’s stay at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy, France.

1889.Van Gogh voluntarily entered the institution in May 1889.

In June of that year, he painted The Starry Night.

He drew inspiration from the landscape around him, then freely reconstructed it through his imagination.

The trial, dialogue, and scenes presented here are an imaginative literary interpretation exploring his artistic and human world.

In May 1889, Vincent van Gogh entered the asylum.

His body entered.

His spirit remained outside the door.

It ran through fields of wheat.

Chasing the sun.

And asking the trees why they knew how to stand when a human being could not.

He was given a room.

A bed.

A window. The window was smaller than his fear. Narrower than the night living within him. He stood before it before dawn. He saw the hills. The sky. The morning star. But the view did not remain beyond the glass. It entered his mind.

There, the sky lost its calm. It began to turn. To twist. And open passages of light through the body of night. This is the world as it is. But it is not the world as I feel it. He brought the canvas. It was a white rectangle.

Like a wall inside a room not yet built. Place upon me what you see. If I paint only what I see, I will lie. I will paint what the night does within me.وضع الأزرق أولًا.He placed blue first. It was not the blue of the sky.

It was the blue of loneliness after it becomes a place. He built the mountains from it. The roof of night. And the distance between the human being and the world. Then he placed yellow. It was not a color. It was a burning window within the blue. He painted a star. Then surrounded it with a circle. Then another.

Until the star was no longer a point in the sky. It became a chamber of light. A chamber where a lost soul might take shelter. He painted a second star. Then a third. And built from light a city suspended above the earthly city. Below, the houses slept. Their roofs were still. Their windows were closed.

The streets were empty. Yet the sky above them was screaming.قالت القرية:The Village said:اخفض صوتك.Lower your voice. The people are asleep. I am dreaming in their place. On the left side of the canvas, Vincent painted a cypress tree. It rose darkly. Like a flame that burned nothing.

Its roots stood in the earth. Its crown entered the sky. I am the only staircase between the two worlds. Where are you climbing? Toward the place where things misunderstood by the earth must go. That night, Night summoned Vincent before the Court of Stillness.

The courtroom stood inside the painting. The Moon sat upon the judge’s bench. The stars stood as the jury. The village slept in the final row. The cypress guarded the door between life and the unknown. You are accused of setting the sky in motion. I found it moving within me. The Moon said:

The sky is calm. Perhaps in the eyes of those who sleep. But those who cannot sleep can hear it turning. One of the stars stepped forward. You made me larger than I am. Because light appears immense when seen from within darkness.

Another star said:أحطتني بحلقات من النار.You surrounded me with rings of fire. I did not paint fire around you. I painted the distance you crossed to reach me. The court summoned Blue.دخل مثقلًا.It entered burdened. What do you represent? Blue answered:

أنا السماء.I am the sky. And the sea. And the final wall between humanity and its own voice. I am sorrow when it grows large enough to become architecture. Can a human being inhabit sorrow? Yes. But art can open a window within it.

The court summoned Yellow. It entered like a lamp carried by a child through a storm. I am the small presence that refused to disappear inside the blue expanse. I am proof that darkness, however vast, cannot swallow a single point of light determined to remain. Vincent looked at the two colors. I did not paint sorrow alone. Had I done so, the painting would have been black.

I painted the struggle between what wounds me and what keeps me from falling. Did painting save you? Vincent remained silent. His hand was covered in paint. It did not cure me. But it gave my pain a form I could look at from outside myself. It transformed chaos into lines.

Fear into color. And loneliness into a sky others could share with me. Why do you paint when the world does not see you? Because a seed does not stop growing merely because no one watches it beneath the soil. Why do you send your paintings to your brother Theo?

Because every person needs one window they can trust will remain open. Theo was that window. He read Vincent’s letters. He preserved his paintings. And believed in him when applause was still a room into which he had not been invited. What do you want from this painting? I do not want people merely to say that the sky is beautiful.

I want those who stand before it to feel that the universe is not still. That night is not the absence of day. It is an entire world laboring in darkness. I want the lonely person to know that above the roof stands a city of stars whose doors remain open. The court delivered its verdict. You have lied about the appearance of the sky. Yet you told the truth about its effect upon the human soul. You altered the positions of things. And constructed a village that did not exist in this form.

But art is not a copy of the window. It is the window after passing through the heart. Vincent left the court. He returned to his room. The window was still small. The walls remained. But the sky was no longer outside. It was upon the canvas. He could carry it between his hands.

One year later, Vincent died. He never knew how future generations would receive his sky. He never saw crowds gather before it in New York. He never heard people whisper its name. He never knew that his night would become a window for millions. The man departed. The night he built remained. This is the power of art. To take a narrow room. And open a universe above it.

To take a window confined by a wall. And make it wider than the sky. To transform the brush into a beam supporting the roof of the soul. To construct from strokes of color a place where the stranger may find the self. Vincent did not paint a peaceful night. He painted a mind attempting to find order within the storm. He made the vortex an arch. The star a window. The cypress a column joining earth and sky.

The village a silent foundation supporting a turbulent universe. He was an architect of color. With the brush, he built what walls could not contain. From his pain, he built a roof beneath which millions now stand, unaware of the room where it began. Perhaps the painting did not save its painter. But it saved something of his voice. Something of his fear. And something of his determination to place light within his darkest night. Each time someone stands before The Starry Night, the trial begins again.

Am I the end?فتجيب النجوم:The stars answer:لا.No. You are the wall that makes light visible.

Another reading of the same canvas is The Sky That Turns Within Me, and Van Gogh visits Imad's New York room with Beethoven in When Absence Rented a Room in My Chest. More painters wait in the literature and art collection.
